Cruz ready for contested GOP convention
The Washington Examiner ^ | 3/9/2016 | Ryan Lovelace

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is more comfortable with a contested convention than a brokered convention that's decided by power brokers in July.

In an interview with Fox News' Megyn Kelly, Cruz explained his reasoning for welcoming a fight on the floor of the GOP convention.

"A contested convention is a different thing where you go, if no one gets 1,237 [delegates] and you've got two front-runners, look Reagan and Ford battled it out in a contested convention. That's what conventions are for," Cruz told Fox News. "If you're fighting between the candidates who have earned the votes of the people, and it's the delegates at the convention who've been elected to do that. That's the way the system works."

The senator has previously expressed reservations about a 'brokered' convention and said it would bring about a "manifest revolt," which caused Fox News to label Cruz's new remarks as a 'revision.' But a brokered convention would involve GOP power brokers settling the convention, whereas Cruz wants the selected delegates to choose from the candidates who make it to a contested convention, so Cruz's statements do not necessarily conflict.

Some political commentators have speculated that the Republican Party could change its rules to lessen the criteria necessary to compete in a contested convention, and thus influence the nomination from outside the formal voting process.

As insurgent candidates Donald Trump and Cruz continue to run the table in the primaries, the Republican Party's leadership may begin exploring all options to shape the nomination this summer.

Go ahead, keep being a Cruz-establishment apologist and making excuses for this weasel.

Like Bush v. Gore

Since you brought it up. . . Let’s remember that Cruz was a pivotal player in getting a Bush into the WH in 2000. AS was John Roberts, who is now Chief Justice of the SCOTUS.

My bet is that he will advocate for himself. Failing that, he will work for Jeb, with himself as VP. Delegates be damned. Will of the people be damneder.

Something tells me we haven’t BEGUN to see dirty, sleazy politics out of him yet.
Cruz is bad news.

Those are the rules as I understand them. They are reasonable.

Uncle Miltie, you are deluding yourself. If it is to the GOPe’s advantage the rules can be changed. That is one of the “reasonable” “rules” that you are speaking of.

“Whooaaaa....help me with CruzLogic here. My analytical skills are failing.”

That is because you are probably not a lawyer. Most of us would think that “contested” and “brokered” are distinctions without a difference.

And, Cruz changed, revised, his protest after he failed to win like he thought he would.

You would think, for someone who is supposedly violently opposed to the establishment, and singularly despised by them, he would repudiate their help, or it would not be extended.

Good grief.

I'd rather not have a brokered convention either, but just what the hell is wrong with what Cruz said?

Rule 40 Qualifying States (Need 8):

Trump SC, AL, GA, MA, TN, MS, HI

Cruz TX, KS, ME, ID

Rubio PR

Kasich None

Good post! Glad to see some on FR still pay attention to details. Of course this is all subject to a possible rule change before the convention.

And to answer a previous question someone else asked, yes territories get counted like states per RNC rules.

Cruz makes me very nervous at this point. I don't think he's stupid. He has to know how compromised our judicial system is. If the doesn't jump through the proper hoops, it won't be hard to find a sympathetic judge to rule against his status as a Natural Born Citizen. It would never make it through the courts in time for the election.

Pure speculation on my part. But, my gosh, it sure would keep him in line.

Cruz is clearly selling a contested convention so he can steal it from Trump. He is looking at the primary calendar and he knows he can’t win otherwise.

IMO, if he’s okay with a convention floor fight, it means he has been assured he will win it.

He’s already bought and paid for.

If all of you Trump supporters know that there is a difference between a "brokered" convention and a "contested" convention, but you are still trying to tar Cruz with this, then you are dishonest.

If you don't know that there is a difference, educate yourselves.

“Saint Ted is going to be in for a big surprise when Mittens takes the nomination from him. Wow, he is naive.”

No, the VP slot will go to Angel Raphael. That will be a sop for the gullible conservatives to go vote for this Amended 2012 loser ticket. Then Angel Raphael will get a plumb and salvage his resume. It would shame Willard, except that Willard is shameless.

That is the plan IMO.

Thank you re: Brokered vs. Contested.

“If you don’t know that there is a difference, educate yourselves.”

Ah, yes, like the difference between ‘war’, ‘police action’ and ‘peacekeeping mission’.

Or ‘brilliant jurist’ and ‘sly shyster’.

I agree with Ted, if it goes to the convention let the delegates decide - not the power brokers.

Trump/Cruz or Cruz/Trump either way the GOPe loose!
