He really lived a charmed life. There is no amount of money or tons of bars of platinum that would get me IN that plane if it had any fuel in it. And then consider it might not have been the most dangerous contraption that he flew. It always amazed me that the test pilots worked for normal military wages.
Never mind the flying - look at all of the famous people that he met and/or worked with.
RIP.
Many years ago, he was the guest lecturer at one of the Air and Space Museum’s GE Aviation series of interviews/presentations by famous aviators. He spoke for an hour or so, followed by answering questions from the audience.
