A Divine Exclamation Point?
February 14, 2016 | Me

Yesterday afternoon when I heard the sad news that Justice Scalia had died, I felt like I had been sucker punched. With the news of Scalia’s death, thoughts tumbled into my mind about how critically important this election really is and how we cannot afford to get this wrong. There is just too much at stake, so many issues seem poised to take this nation into darkness and possibly real despair if they are not thoughtfully, objectively, humbly, prayerfully addressed. If the leaders we are choosing are not doing their absolute best to serve this nation, its people, its Constitution and the principles of equal justice and opportunity which seem to be so neglected today – we may be done as a nation of free people.

Thoughts crossed my mind about how so many people seem to be making their decisions about who to vote for in this election based almost exclusively on their emotions, their anger, their wants, their desire for someone strong enough to stop what they are feeling, to do something, seemingly anything - and if we can get even a bit, that might be okay too. People don’t seem to be spending much, if any, time trying to sort out the accusations, the facts, the histories about the various candidates. It seems that many have already attached and projected their hopes on who is saying what each wants to hear. It seems impossible to raise opinions about candidates without being called names, insulted. We are in a bad place as a people.

So Justice Scalia died yesterday. Why yesterday? Why not after the election? Justice Scalia was a one of my absolute favorites. He consistently sought to be true to the original meaning of the Constitution, not to change it or interpret it according to most recent version of the desires of society, Hollywood, politicians, or the media. He was a man of strong faith. Why him?

Personally, I’m deeply convicted that this election is the most important election of my lifetime regarding the future of this nation and our freedoms. As a person of faith, as a veteran, as an attorney - I have long understood that this nation was founded on principles that come from our Judeo-Christian heritage and beliefs. These are the principles that will give this nation a future as free people, with the right to express our opinions, to live our faith, to tolerate other’s rights and liberties, to petition our government, to pursue our dreams according to our abilities.

So when I heard the news that Justice Scalia had died yesterday – to me it felt like God was using the timing of Justice Scalia’s death as an exclamation point. He died in an election year following 2 terms of substantial abuse of Presidential power, following 2 terms of the GOP Establishment cowering and breaking promises to those who elected them, at a time when as many as four Supreme Court Justices will likely be appointed in the near future, the same day as the Republican Debate and at a time when there several clear paths with their consequences that lay ahead of us (as Glenn Beck has pointed out). One path leads us down the road to socialism and less freedom; one path leads us down the path of having a strong man leading us possibly into real darkness; another path leads to more crony relationships between business/the rich/the elite/the government (the status quo), continuing anger and division; and the final path leads us back to the principles of the Constitution. The choice is ours and the consequences will be borne by us all. So to me, Justice Scalia’s death is a divine exclamation point telling us to choose wisely, thoughtfully, prayerfully, unselfishly, looking clear eyed at the possible consequences. It is the last exit, the last turn in the road for a long while.

Interesting and I don’t necessarily disagree.

One thing struck me. Your “He was a man of strong faith. Why him?”

I was also thinking about that this morning, early in the midst of a fitful night, actually. Why?

Then I happened to think about what he was best at. Judging honestly and forcefully. I am personally thinking this man has been called home for some other purpose unbeknownst to us, perhaps to assist in judging the actions of someone else not yet called to task, but needfully so.

We shall see what happens from here.

Keep in mind that "Us" represents half, or less, of the people in this country.

Personally, I believe that our Creator cares about how we govern ourselves about as much as He does about the outcome of a football game where His divine intervention is invoked by countless players every weekend.

We are free to choose how we govern ourselves and do as we please. He has given us rules to live by in this life and have been shown the path to Paradise in the next. Whether we do or not is up to us.

Exactly. My head swam when I heard the news, thinking of all the implications for our country at the timing of Scalia’s loss. I also wondered why God allowed this to happen at this juncture; His ways are higher than my ways, so I cannot see His divine plan yet. But I couldn’t help but ask why He didn’t wait 10 months and 6 days to take Scalia home? I prayed for answers. Is He removing His protective hand from our nation? What about the remnant who have been praying (2 Chron. 7:14), has it not been enough?

I prayed thinking about the darkness that another progressive USSC justice would bring to bear upon our nation. The 2nd amendment scuttled. 1st amendment free speech stifled. And then God brought to mind the incredible darkness that already envelopes this country.. PP selling baby body parts, children denied a mother or a father, Islam on the rise, all while the majority condones these or looks the other way. We’re beyond sickness and evil. God isn’t ushering it in. We did. The oppressive darkness is already here.

The confirmation came when I awoke this morning and read the incredibly wicked tweets from the left regarding Scalia. They rejoiced in his passing and exuberantly proclaimed their anticipation of another leftist SC justice immediately being appointed by zero (daring anyone to stop the confirmation). The same people who wrote malevolent posts celebrating Scalia’s death, the same people who voted for the reprobate zero (twice), now demand the seating of an impolitic judge. We are awash in darkness.

Yes, it’s an exclamation point. Wikipedia’s definition: “and often marks the end of a sentence. Example: “Watch out!” Luke 21:36

America won’t fall because of the death of one man. It will fall because of the inaction and self imposed helplessness of its people.

"There is just too much at stake, so many issues seem poised to take this nation into darkness and possibly real despair if they are not thoughtfully, objectively, humbly, prayerfully addressed."

This is a good description of what so many are feeling ... darkness, despair.

I'm very thankful for someone who's not ashamed to say how we should approach what we're witnessing. Although, I do feel the humbly, prayerfully part should be stressed.

Please expand on that thought.
