WASHINGTON - The unexpected death of Justice Antonin Scalia creates a complicated situation in Washington to determine his replacement on the high court. Republicans are extremely unlikely to confirm anyone that President Barack Obama nominates in the final months of his second term to replace a justice considered a major pillar of modern conservatism - a position that top Republicans, Republican operatives, and presidential candidates already have made clear on Saturday evening.

"The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new President," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement...

The House plays no role in the confirmation of judges.
The Senate has the sole power to confirm or reject nominees.
It can block any nominee indefinitely.

The media will probably come out with a line about racism holding back Obama’s pick. The Republicans will fold like a cheap suit, wet themselves, and approve a black muslim female supreme court justice who’s only 45 years old.

I completely agree but this time it will be a black male homo muslim and a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Agree...NO "sense of the Senate", NO "the President is entitled to make his own appointments to be considered favorably"...

Been there, done that.

Currently, these 8 "old people" are the Supreme Court, but many are older than Scalia was.

Don't have a problem with "wise elders", particularly, but there is NO WAY it would be acceptable to replace Justice Scalia with the likes of another Bader-Ginsberg, Sotomayor, Kagan, or Breyer. Also not the "moderate" Kennedy.

Pretty sure there will be NOT be an Obama appointment getting through before a year from now, when we will have a new President. God willing, we pull together, get our opinions out to the Congress-critters, and the Creek don't rise.

You got that right. Scalia has been my favorite SC Justice for decades. I know I’ll never see another one like him.

Obama will try to pick someone that can generate a race or gender angle (black, Hispanic, woman) to set up that narrative.
