Cruz’s misleading attack that Trump ‘convinced’ the gov to ‘bulldoze’ a widow’s home

"Trump bankrolled politicians to steamroll the little guy, a pattern of sleaze stretching back decades. Worse? Trump still supports eminent domain today."

Who knew such a wonky topic would find its way into political attacks in the Republican presidential race? An ad released this week by Ted Cruz's presidential campaign lodged a renewed attack on Donald Trump's support for eminent domain and alleged use of the government's powers for private gain, to bully an elderly woman out of her home.

There are two problematic aspects of this ad: the misleading headlines that accompany the narration and the cherry-picked footage of Trump's answers that misrepresent the context of his statements. We took a look at these two elements, the context of the ad and the actual sources of the quotes and footage the ad used.

The Facts

The case

In 1994, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, a government agency, attempted to seize an elderly widow's home. The agency tried to invoke "eminent domain," which refers to the government's right to acquire private property for public use.

The house was located near the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The agency wanted to turn the house and two other properties over to the Trump Organization. Trump had planned to landscape the area and build a new parking lot, with a waiting area for limousines.

The woman, Vera Coking, was in her 70s and had lived in her home for 37 years. She refused to give it up. Then, a four-year court battle ensued.

>>>Here’s a question for the Trumpbots: what good is a wall going to do when you have 20 million newly-minted Democrat voters?<<<

I think you should direct that question to the Rubiobots and the GOPe. Of course, you take out The Wall Part since they have no interest in protecting our Borders.

“It is stunning to watch professed conservatives fall into lockstep with a lying nationalist, who’s base instincts are anathema to conservatism, and condemn one of the few conservatives who went to DC and refused to buckle under to the establishment.”

Not as stunning as watching people put their ‘purity party’ before Country.

Incorrect.

In 2014 when she had to go to a nursing home in California her family put it up for auction. She got to stay in it for as long as she was able. Carl Icann won the auction, having a vested interest in the property since he is holding most of the debt on the Trump casinos. He has plans to demolish it but I can find no evidence that he has done that yet.

Where the heck do you get your info?

“Some of you Cruz people are illogic idiots.”

Some? Show me one who ISN’T.

And they accuse Trump supporters of being mindless zombies! Well, I guess that’s what happens when you believe God’s hand-picked your candidate.

Without the LOCAL Redevelopment Agency pushing this, it would have never occurred. The issue of course is simple, was the Woman thrown into the Street as suggested by these lying Political Ads? The simple answer is NO.

“So we should be able to make people do what they don’t want just because you offered them money they didn’t want. I get it. Screw principles when money is involved. Makes sense given that you support Trump. Principles don’t matter.”

You pay Fed Taxes every year right? You are paying a govt the funds abortion and a whole host of other hateful things. When you personal stand on the principals you claim to hold, let us know. When you withhold those taxes because you don’t agree where the money goes, let us know. We all do a portion of what we don’t want to get along in this great country. You want to argue it’s wrong in the ED case with Trump, then you gotta admit you participant in the wrongness of it yourself.

None of us are perfect. This woman dug her heels in, it was her right to not move. That’s what the courts are for. The system in this case worked.

Fifteen years later Ichan bought the property at auction (for $530k) because the grandson couldn't find any takers at the amounts offered to his grandmother in the past so he put the house up for auction.

I think Ichan is part of the group that owns what was Trump Plaza.

“The fact the Trump lost to her has nothing whatsoever to his attitude that it is ok for him to take the private property of anther American for his personal enrichment.”

Rich coming from Cruz supporters who want to claim since no real ‘harm’ could be proven to happen to Carson, Cruz’s sleazy cheating tactics are to be ignored.

Could someone please post support for the prevalent theory that Trump convinced the town to file the eminent domain?

The statement supports a point of view but I see no justification for making it. I have looked into the agency involved and it oversaw development in multiple communities then and now. It has overseen many projects, a significant proportion of them involved eminent domain, and looking over the list Trump’s casino was only one such project, and a relatively small one at that.

Did all the developers involved strong arm the board or did it believe the developments were in the town’s interest?

“a local resident who claims that Coking was holding out for $4 million for the property, a price Trump wasn’t willing to pay.”

So the Trump haters want to pretend the poor old widow was holding out for emotional reasons, poor thing, when in reality, she just wanted a bigger check.

Yeh, feeling sorry for her. Not. In the end her stupid decision cost her money. Oh well.

Maybe her home was priceless to her.

I doubt that most of the critics here actually have any sympathy for this woman, it is just a talking point. The woman overplayed her hand.

CRDA v. Banin

Trump's name appears 61 times in the judge's decision. From paragraph 2:

These three cases involve a challenge to Casino Reinvestment Development Authority's (CRDA's) attempt to exercise its power of eminent domain. CRDA and Trump seek a judgment determining that CRDA is duly vested with the power of eminent domain and has appropriately exercised the power. . . .

My Dad is from New Jersey. I am well aware of what it takes to get things done there, I’ve heard about it for years.

Again, I am not being Obtuse or even arguing the point.

Without the State of New Jersey and the LOCAL Redevelopment Agency, there would have beeen no Casino in the first place.

The Woman did not get kicked out of her Home, period. That is the issue here. Again, what does this even have to do with the POTUS? The answer is nothing at all.

We obviously see things differently and it will not change no matter how many Keystrokes we contribute, so we will just have to agree to disagree.

Have a good day my FRiend.

They keep accusing US of having a cult of personality! But they equate their hero with the gods! He’s just a little man with a whiny voice and a Canadian passport.

The point of the article is that Trump wanted to bulldoze her home but didn't actually get to do it because the court ruled against him.

Does that really make it OK? Just because somebody prevented him from doing what he wanted to do? I don't think so.

Trump is a big-government kind of guy, there's no getting around it. He's not a small-government conservative.
