GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Many of the Republican presidential candidates descended Friday on Greenville ahead of Saturday's CBS debate.
But only one was savvy enough to get himself enlisted as the opening act of a throbbing, trembling Christian rock concert that packed 14,000 evangelicals into a downtown arena on Friday night.
So here came Ted Cruz, striding onto the catwalk of a stage, beaming under the spotlight, leading the crowd in prayer, asking them to unite behind him in next Saturday's primary election, and jumping up like a basketball player high-fiving fans as he walked into the locker rooms in the bowels of the arena.
"Welcome to Winter Jam -- and to God be the glory," the Texas senator said.
Winter Jam is a touring, four-hour show featuring born-again Christian rock and rap artists. It performed at Greenville's Bon Secours Wellness Arena on Friday night.

For any Republican politician, this was a captive and prized audience. Evangelical Christians are an especially influential voting block in South Carolina, especially in the Greenville area, known as the Upcountry.
Cruz gave about six minutes of remarks and prayer at the start of the concert. He thanked the crowd "for standing unapologetically with Jesus, for confessing your faith with love."
Cruz talked about religious liberty being "under assault," but said that across the country "people are waking up."
"Our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian values," Cruz said. "Those values of life and marriage are under assault, religious liberty is under assault, and yet the American people are rising up."
Cruz did not attack any rivals, nor did he make an overt political pitch. But he cast himself as a champion of social conservative principles,

Good grief, another debate? Enough already!
To look at the other side of the equation, “The kindness of the Lord leads unto repentance.”
Sometimes the agent with the onus to show the kindness of the Lord, is His believer.
I can understand the “strict evangelical” take but that also makes them wooden.
This is also leads, not guarantees first time out of the box. It might take multiple such influences before she gets the picture. Just because Christ did it once as an illustration doesn’t make that the invariant human story. I’m glad God kept on persisting with stubborn ole me when most humans would have given up, because it finally, finally worked, after many griefs and many trials.
At any rate Cruz could have beckoned, even at the cost of the catcalls, but he pushed away, and that moment won’t come back to him. Oh he will keep an “image” intact but that might be the only thing that will hold together for him. This is part why people are seeing more substance in Donald Trump, open sinner as he is. He’s getting his Donald ducks in a row to defend America from some very real risks, and getting a consensus behind the need and the will to do it. This consensus is important because it will echo in other political races.
Nobody could shill for the Upstate Christian Conservative vote quite like the Huckster.
Yet, He still got beat by McLame.
I do not believe for one single second you were ever supporting Sen. Cruz.
Trump is nothing but a lying, nasty, cheating, dirty old man.
I don’t believe you either.
God knows we are human. The Apostle Paul, in Romans 7, gives me hope that someone who tries to listen to the Holy Spirit and do the Father’s will and falls short is not condemned or rejected by Him.
God knows that even though we are saved by Grace, we are still at war with the sin of the flesh and because of our human nature we will fall short every day. The glory of Jesus sacrifice for us means we are no longer judged under a law that no human can follow perfectly.
I was solidly for both Trump and Cruz. I honestly didn't think Trump would be around this long but loved that, in the beginning, he was taking the media heat instead of Cruz.
Whenever I posted something remotely positive about Trump, I was inundated with nasty comments. This didn't just happen at FR but on Facebook and other political websites. The Cruz supporters came after me and the result was that I found myself defending Trump more than I ordinarily would have.
I get very tired of Cruz supporters acting as if the attacks on character are only one sided.
You know they weren't there to see Cruz don't you?
Gracious. Just try to be a little objective. As someone who initially supported Cruz (over 300 bucks donated) and flipped to trump both sides give as good as they get.
amen Elyse. Free Republic has REALLY changed. I honestly thought this was a solidly conservative site and now, nothing but bitterness and vitriole towards a really conservative candidate such as Ted Cruz.
Beyond sad to watch.
I agree. This is the 5th presidential cycle I’ve been through in FR, and this time around is far far worse than I’ve ever seen. It has become unrecognizable.
And the same people who hate Ted Cruz, hated Michelle Bachmann in the last election for the same reason.
This too bears repeating.....
You got it all wrong. He deserves ridicule for trying to use faith as a political tool. This is a most vile act to go to a Christian concert just to say the opening prayer and receive the adoration of the masses which will be reported in the papers the next day.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9
No, those people sold their country down the drain.
“So did Cruz join a Christian rock band or did he glom onto to their crowd?”
Cruz does have a habit of it. Like the Huckabee Kim Davis scene. Cruz shows up trying to look important.
Am I supposed to prove something to you? I don't get up in the morning to wipe crap off my shoes. I decided to support a winner.
Your description of Trump is a perfect reflection of the candidate you support, except for age. He is a lying smarmy lawyer. Poor Teddy Bare! Your guy will lose.
“So Sen. Cruz opens for a rap act”
Really. “Christian rock” is as bad as a rap act. Worse, really — borderline blasphemy.
He should stay away from that stuff if he wants to be credible to true evangelicals.
I do see Cruz as the christian-rock type of candidate.
