Donald Trump has now made clear that the thrust of his campaign will not be conservatism. It will instead be populism and nationalism.

So the take-away here is that there is no place for populism and nationalism in the "conservative" movement?

Trump is a realist and practical. He is also pro-USA in every way, shape and form. And he can get things done.

Reagan signed an amnesty bill.

Which he deeply regretted later.

Dear Mr Shapiro, Candidates come and go, a reputation as a shameless liar follows a writer around for the rest of their career.

Trump Tweet

Remember, it was the Republican Party, with the help of Conservatives, that made so many promises to their base, BUT DIDN’T KEEP THEM! Hi DT

Pretty tough to argue with the point. Lots of Campaign trail "Conservatives" went to DC in 2010 and 2014 and did not keep their promises to the base. Everyone from John Kaisch to Ted Cruz is on the campaign trail claiming to be "The Real Conservative". When John "God wants us to grow the Welare state: Ksicih can call himself "Conservative" the word has lost all meaning.

Breitbart is solely for Cruz...and if you click on the link, you’ll get an email from Cruz wanting money...

Trump is an American first, born on American soil and has the American Dream...built his company, is a world known business man, and is trying to put America back on her feet after years of socialist government has shreaded her....

I wonder if Reagan would re- do his 1986 amnesty policy if he knew what the future would bring

You positively certain the book you cite was truly written by said author? You certain his position papers were authored by him too? I call into question whether the very book he stands behind whether he wrote the thing or not wasn’t done by a ghost author. Don’t you find it quite odd that he can never cite a passage from the book and apply it to how he’d apply those principles to the government he so earnestly wishes to govern? Find it odd he can’t put together 2 cohesive thoughts together verbally into a vision beyond vagueness and cliches? Verbally this man couldn’t pass a 7th grade civics course. Like Obama I have to tune him out the first 30 seconds into any speech. Why? Because I can just about quote and catch phrase he will use, give you the exact slogans he will use and when prompted for details give you the same scatter brained responses. Are we that ignorant of a society that we’ve been blinded by a salesman who can speak on the level of a 7th grader running for class president saying all the goodie things to win the seat? I’ll make the school cool again, I’ll make sure walls go up in that cafeteria and all get cookies. Maybe I’m way off but either he is surrounded by truly smart people as he professes who run every ounce of his operations and he is only a face or he must run in circles of equally verbally challenged people. I’m not asking for for a verbal Reagan but damn give me someone that can stay on point for more than 15 seconds.

The nation is in decline; what we need is the GREAT MAN, who will be our savior.

Where have I heard something like that before?

Nationalist and populist and efficient... the exact combination for most of the worst leaders of the 20th Century.

There is no God but Conservatism, and Ted Cruz is it's [sic] prophet.

Did you write that or were you quoting someone else, or just being a typical trumpette blaring out a new ditty?

As attack manure it is fairly creative, but it might offend the worshipers of THE DEAL.

To cling exclusively to the old conservative problems when there are existential threats and the Obama legacy to obliterate is rather foolish. Planned Parenthood seems to be being handled by the states but could get a congressional kicker with a Republican president

I love the mindless idiocy of the “Conservative Purity” bots. They all worship this myth that Reagan went to DC, took off his coat, and proceeded to kick everyone’s butt.

No, the real Reagan went to DC, and cut deals with a Democrat Congress to get what he wanted done and the “Conservative Media Establishment” of the time all when into hysteric about “Reagan betraying the Conservative base”.

If Cruz wins, he will go to DC and be forced to do the same thing to advance and the “Conservative Purity” bots will go into hysterics about it just like they did with Reagan.

If it were not for Ted Cruz standing up and demanding the republicans attempt to stop Obama we wouldn’t even be having this debate!!!

Of course we would be having this debate. That’s just silly.

My question is, what have so-called conservatives actually conserved? Most of the so-called conservatives in Washington have only managed to conserve their elevated positions and their incomes. I can’t think of a single thing other than that, that has been conserved.

BINGO! Well said!

Is this Canadian or American conservatism of which you speak?

What I heard from Baton Rogue last night put it all in focus....American conservatism is what my household prefers!
