If these guys aren’t Islamic, why didn’t he consider targeting a mosque? People there aren’t allowed to carry guns, and it would make the news too...

My church is anything but a gun free zone.
A filthy jihadi MIGHT get two shots off.
Even if they pick a place they only believe to be a gun-free zone...It speaks volumes.
More reasons to kick the savages out and to keep guns in the hands of the non-violent normal people.
Same here. I know personally of several. Probably more that I don't know about. Terrorists would have a hard time at our church.
Same at my church, quite a number of people carrying. We also have LEO members of our church including some higher level SWAT team members. One day each year we honor the men and women in uniform. They come in full dress and they bring some of their cool toys: armored vehicles, mobile command post, mobile towers, etc. Quite impressive, especially as there is a small mosque two lots down, line of sight between our parking lots.
He doesn’t want to be charged with a hate crime by attacking a mosque.
No doubt there are already plenty of guns and probably some RPGs and SEMTEX there, too. They are commonly referred to as "ammo dumps".
