Upset at truck tolls, Ocean State Job lot postpones expansion

Governor Raimondo’s proposed new truck-tolls, headed this week for House and Senate votes, may cost Rhode Island business, according to an announcement Saturday by Ocean State Job Lot.

The company said it is putting on hold its "plan for expansion within the state," specifically what it described as a 500,000-square-foot, $50-million distribution center.

At a Saturday morning news conference at Ocean State Job Lot's new store at 5947 Post Road in North Kingstown, David Sarlitto, the company’s executive director, issued this statement:

"At the re-location opening of its flagship store in North Kingstown today, Job Lot announced its opposition to the current legislation regarding truck tolling in the state of RI, with a further statement that its plan for expansion within the state – specifically, a 500,000 sq ft $50M distribution center - is now on hold pending review and discussion with the state regarding business practices.

...

Earlier in the week, Job Lot CEO Marc Perlman told the House Finance Committee that the proposed new truck tolls - capped at $20 per day in any one direction - would cost his company more than six times what he pays in tolls in every other state he does business in combined.

If you like your money you can keep you money. Let me guess, any money collected by the tolls to fix the roads will be siphoned off to some slush fund

Ocean State has GREAT bargains.

A great place to browse.

I haven’t been there in a while but my kids and grandkids always find a good deal.

Company will have to apply a surcharge going into that state to show a profit. Fees and taxes have consequences. Texas for instance, is expanding toll roads, but where they are building g them along Interstates are requiring a free lane be built for every toll lane.

I left Rhode Island 62 years ago. Of course, I was only six months old and needed my mother to do the actual move, but I knew even then that growing up in RI wasn't going to be a fit for me ...

Actually, when the TICONDEROGA changed her base to Norfolk from RI, my mother and I shipped with my father (who was assigned to the Big T) for the transfer ... and I had my diapers changed on the flight deck.

Hmmm. They could tack a “RI Toll Surcharge” on every transaction and provide the Governor’s phone number under it for people to call with questions.

I travel for work in MD, PA, NJ and DE. I just turned in an expense report for $408 just for EZ Pass. That’s just for a car. Truck rates have to be insane.

I stole Mrs. BN away from Rhode Island 45 years ago...War Reparations for the War of Northern Aggression, don't you know!

Both of her sisters also married Georgia boys. Two brothers married Alabama girls. Two other brothers stayed home in RI with RI wives.
