“Blind Side” Mom of Michael Oher Praises Adopted Son on Making Second Super Bowl
Life News ^ | Feb 5, 2016 | Micaiah Bilger

On Super Bowl Sunday, proud adoptive mom Leigh Anne Tuohy will watch her son play football for the second time in the biggest American sports game of the year.

Tuohy’s son Michael Oher is the offensive lineman for the Carolina Panthers and formerly the Baltimore Ravens, who he helped to achieve victory in the 2013 Super Bowl.

Oher’s life had a troubled beginning. When Oher was born, his mother was addicted to drugs and his father was in prison. He struggled in school, moved through homes in foster care and spent time homeless until he met Leigh Anne and her family as a teen. Adopting a teenage boy was no small decision for the Tuohys, but the family welcomed Oher into their home, invested time into helping him with school and encouraged him to pursue his love of sports.

His life and his adoption story inspired millions after filmmakers portrayed it in the 2009 movie The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock, also an adoptive parent.

Oher’s adoptive mom, Leigh Anne, continues to cheer on her son amid his fame and success. She told Today that she is “really excited” to watch her son play in the 2016 Super Bowl.

“I’m going to put my bling jersey on and be the proudest, most obnoxious momma I can possibly be,” she said. “It has been an amazing journey. Literally not one part of it was anticipated.”

She said their hopes for the film came true: “When people see this movie, they realize there are other Michael Ohers out there who can make something of their lives if someone just turns around and asks how they can help.”

She said Oher also inspired her and her husband, Sean, to “give back as much as we can.” The Tuohys travel around the country speaking about adoption and encouraging families.

“We need people to get involved and make a difference,” Tuohy said. “Money is not going to change it. It’s about people. It’s about us realizing that everyone has value and about being nice to the guy next to you.”

Tuohy said her whole family has been very blessed by Oher and the adoption. She said they all will be on the field Sunday during the big game, cheering Oher on.

If the pro-abortion people had gotten to his mom he probably would have been aborted and the world would not benefit from his contribution.

He apparently doesn’t like the movie:

“I’m not trying to prove anything,’’ Oher said. “People look at me, and they take things away from me because of a movie. They don’t really see the skills and the kind of player I am. That’s why I get downgraded so much, because of something off the field.

“This stuff, calling me a bust, people saying if I can play or not ... that has nothing to do with football. It’s something else off the field. That’s why I don’t like that movie.’’

Me too. Every time they play the film, I take the time to watch it. It’s such a powerful story.

Yes, it’s a great movie. Guess I have to root for Carolina now. Which is fine, we were kind of going to root for them anyway, East Coast rules! (something like that, we all had a bad season with our teams!)

I also am an Adoptive MOM, but I just consider myself MOM...

We were very blessed as we got our son as a new born, and he recently turned 44 ..oh my how did that happen!!!!

He was a gift on day one, he is a gift today and I always tell him how lucky we have been...He was always smart, bright, talented and has achieved much in life...tall, handsome and gifted...He was so easy to raise...

Not Flesh of my Flesh, not Bone of my Bone, but still Miraculously my Own, and I never forgot for a single minuet, he didn’t grow under my Heart, HE GREW IN IT...

Hope he is wise enough to hold on to and invest his money and fame like Earl Campbell and George Forman have done.

I loved this movie...an American tale!!! Tough guy that I am,...I cried throughout this movie!!! They were tears of joy for a little boy, down on his luck, who was loved and helped by people of good faith, heart & soul, and, who grew into everything that he could be!!! God Bless America!!! And, God blss Michael Oher!!!

And it's Oher's second Super Bowl. He went with the Ravens and won in 2013.

I highly recommend the book The Blind Side. Not only for the story of Mchael Oher's and the Tuohys, but for some great football stories. If you're a fan of the game at all, you'll love it.

IIRC, the movie was based on only one chapter of the book.

What is he complaining about? The movie portrayed him as a superb athlete. I don’t understand how anyone who saw the movie would call him a “bust.”

He — like all athletes — is getting older. He is not as consistently quick as he used to be. That’s why he’s criticized, not because of some long ago movie.

You are right. The book was fantastic. The author taught us a lot about football. Bill Walsh vs. Bill Parcels. Throw in Lawerence Taylor forming the need to protect the blind side. Then there was the funny part. The big black kid was a fish out of water. The funniest line was from an out of stte relative: “I’m on my 3rd beer. Who is this big black kid in your family Christmas picture?”

Didn’t bother to see the movie. Sandra Bullock does not look like someone’s mother. It probably emphasized racism more than it should.

I know this family a bit from church and we have a number of mutual friends who know them better than I do. I talked to Michael just before training camp opened a few seasons back. I really get the sense he has his head on straight. Sean Tuohy has built a significant empire of roughly 100 fast food restaurants. He knows how to handle and make money and he still has a lot of influence on Michael. I’d be surprised if Michael ended up broke.

Films almost never live up to the books they're based on. And so you may not enjoy this one as much as someone who never read the book. A single page of text can contain all the information needed for a two hour film. But Blind Side was extremely good and genuinely moving with no emphasis at all on race or racism. It showed a well off Christian family (and Republicans to boot) in a positive light living out their faith. And it's probably the best performance (very believable as a mom) Sandra Bullock has ever delivered.

Exactly so.

It seems to diminish him to hear him say that. It seems...ungraceful or ungrateful.
