After trade ministers from the U.S. and 11 other countries on either side of the Pacific on Thursday signed one of the biggest trade deals in history, President Obama called on Republicans and Democrats to approve it "this year."
Obama said in a statement he would "continue working with Democrats and Republicans in Congress to enact it [the Trans-Pacific Partnership] into law as soon as possible so our economy can immediately start benefiting from the tens of billions of dollars in new export opportunities."
"We should get TPP done this year and give more American workers the shot at success they deserve and help more American businesses compete and win around the world," he said.
Obama clearly has the November election in mind: Leading candidates in both parties oppose the TPP while the deal has supporters and critics on both sides of the aisle in Congress.
America's 11 partners in the TPP, which has been under negotiation for five years, are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. All 12 countries must now ratify it.
At the signing ceremony in Auckland, New Zealand, U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman expressed confidence that Congress would approve the deal.
"We are working with members of Congress, working with the leadership of Congress, educating everybody as to what's in the agreement, addressing their questions and concerns," he said.
"And I'm confident that at the end of the day, because of the strong benefits to the U.S. economy - which have been estimated to be over $130 billion a year in GDP growth, as well as more than $350 billion in additional exports - that members of Congress will see the benefits for their constituents and we'll have the necessary bipartisan support to be approved," Froman said

flood our country with unsafe imported food,
jack up the cost of medicines by giving big pharmaceutical corporations new monopoly rights to keep lower cost generic drugs off the market,
empower corporations to attack our environmental and health safeguards,
ban Buy American policies needed to create green jobs,
roll back Wall Street reforms,
sneak in SOPA-like threats to Internet freedom,
and undermine human

Wait a second! Didn’t I just read, in the last couple of days or so, that obummer signed the TPP in New Zealand very quietly? Maybe I heard wrong. From what I read; he did it there because we Americans are so against it and he knows it.
When it comes to doing anything to undermine the American way; you can be obamao is all over it. They only reason he wanted to become Prezident was to do his level best to destroy our country. A country he never liked or was ever a part of personally.

We are now living the tinfoil hat theories of 20 years ago.
Obama is an idiot, we can all agree on that. Putting aside the fact that wherever he meddles things get worse and not better the real issue here is capitalism. I think the question is about competition. The very nature of capitalism gives us winners and losers. If we simply removed trade barriers thats a plus. Make better products, more products that people want, you’re the winner. What TPP does is change the teams in the pursuit of ‘fairness’ which is fundamentally unfair to the winners. If it was a football game the goal is to change the outcome from 36-6 to 20-17. Maybe the result is one point higher. an overall gain but one side will certain;y have less. That side is us and thats Obama’s goal.
We certainly not exporting a vast array of products like we use to 50 years ago.

Strange thing is, we were at that time paying our workers more than other nations were theirs.
We could still export, because we made good things others wanted.
