Fourth-placed Ben Carson flees Iowa for Florida before the results are in claiming he (tr)

Ben Carson may have come up short in Iowa but he is ready to get back out on the campaign trail - as soon as he gets some fresh clothes. In one of his most bizarre statements to date, Carson told reporters on Monday that he would be leaving Iowa early so he could go to Florida and get some clean clothes. His communications director Larry Ross then confirmed this in a statement released to the media, which read; 'After spending 18 consecutive days on the campaign trail, Dr. Carson needs to go home and get a fresh set of clothes.' The statement also shot down rumors that Carson was suspending his campaign.

Be there with your team. He finished 4th. I'd be angry as a volunteer about this.

“In one of his most bizarre statements to date...”

Nope, the Great Pyramids as grain silos and the story about stabbing someone were more bizarre. Carson is done.

Or taking off from the campaign to book tour a big when he was at 20%+ in the polls.

I like Carson... as Surgeon General. He needs to stick to a script though.

This will win him the Biden Seal of Approval for being both clean and articulate.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing although I could not remember who said it.

Don’t they usually scramble over to NH right after IA? Why wouldn’t one bring enough clothes? I’m fairly certain he could afford to buy some or have some sent overnight. That would be much less tiring than flying back and forth. It seems like self-sabotage.

Carson seems to me to be a fine man who is now in a vipers next and it’s rougher for a novice than he thought.

Amazing that the other first timer, Trump, has done so well.

Pretty bad if his campaign can’t afford to buy him some undies, a shirt or two, and send a couple of suits to the cleaners.

I think this is a figure of speech. He probably just wants to recharge a bit, and if he’s flying 1st class, there’s no reason he can’t get rest on the flights. (Yes, I know some people can’t rest on a plane, but Carson seems like he could take a catnap almost anywhere. Almost a little too much...)

I think Trump underestimated Cruz a bit. Trump hasn’t figured out how to attack, lie, steal and then “praise Jesus!’ the next minute.

Did he ever hear of Laundromat or dry cleaners

Trump could have had this if he had invested more in the traditional Iowa ground game.

I agree.

Trump is thinking bang for the buck. Cruz is all about the optics and doors.

It was a must win for Cruz.

He’s probably going home to see his family. It’s probably been a few weeks.

Though, he should have shown his volunteers some respect to stay a few hours and thank them.

Here’s another link from that page:

Carson knows full well he isn’t going to be elected president.

He apparently toyed with the idea of the House Speakership—which a) wouldn’t have happened and b) he’d have absolutely been eaten alive in.

But he also may be interested in Congress—which is the level he should have aimed for all along.

Analogously, Fiorina should have run for California state assembly where she could have built a track record; instead, she ran for Senate against Boxer first time out, got taken down with a single attack ad, and decided to run for POTUS.

I don’t know that the GOP had a more likely candidate to put up against Boxer, so that’s understandable. And the GOPe always seem to want a token black and token white in the presidential primary—which I guess is why she and Ben were humored as they were.

But yeah, she didn’t belong there much more than Ben. She at least was more knowledgeable in politics and foreign affairs, but she’s less likable personally.

Anyway, if she wanted to move home to VA, she should have run for Congress there.

Likewise, Lynn Cheney should have stayed in VA and run for Congress there, instead of moving to challenge a more conservative senator in WY four years ago
