Ted Cruz, Triumphant
The National Review ^ | February 1, 2016 | David French

Posted on 02/01/2016 10:28:42 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

I tip my cap, unreservedly, to Ted Cruz. With everything on the line - and so many GOP colleagues cowed and intimidated - he took on Donald Trump and won. Late last year I wrote that the GOP needed an actual leader, someone who would step up and take on Trump directly:

Now is the time. A presidential campaign is an early test of leadership, a proving ground for dealing with the challenges of the world's most difficult job. I don't want the last man standing. I want the guy who took down the king. If Trump can absorb the best shots from the Republican party's best young talent, then he deserves the nomination. If one of the two talented freshman senators can dethrone The Donald, then at least we have some assurance that they can first stand strong against the coming Clinton onslaught and then have the strength of will to lead a nation desperate not just for wisdom but for the right kind of tough-minded leadership.

Cruz challenged the king of polls - the man who'd intimidated so many others - and he won. And he did so when the conventional wisdom said that he'd lose - that the larger the turnout, the greater the chance that Trump would win. Instead, with record Iowa turnout, Cruz won.

This is a deeply encouraging moment for the conservative movement. To his immense and undying credit, Cruz refused to pander on ethanol, he defied Iowa's popular governor, and he stuck to his conservative principles - and he won.

Yes, Marco Rubio exceeded all expectations, but tonight was Ted Cruz's night. There is much hard fighting ahead, but had Trump won, we would even now be shuddering not just for the future of the conservative movement but for the future of a nation bounded and governed by constitutional principles. Cruz stood up when others fled. Iowa rewarded him for his courage, and tonight Cruz is ascendant, Trump is in retreat, and the conservative movement breathes the air of new life and new hope.

New Hampshire represents a different challenge, and the race is far from over, but Cruz deserves the accolades - and momentum - he'll get from Iowa. Well done, Ted. You did your part for your country on this crucial night.

Sorry I have not read Trumps books. The point is that a lie is a lie and to claim oneself has higher values than others and then will lie, makes the one claiming superior values the hypocrite.

As you have pointed out Trump admits who he is. Cruz cannot admit who he is. And God said he hates liars, most especially those that claim His name...

Now the evangelicals have a primary win in Iowa, is there any chance Iowa will flip to voting Republican come November? I do not see Cruz carrying Iowa, it does seem the liberals will make hay over his dirty campaign tricks and ending the state subsidy ethanol... And there is that eligibility burden Cruz is carrying. It was very stupid to mess with Dr. Carson.

I am looking long term... the political agenda is open borders. Cruz will not stop the powers that be that are determined to end borders. That is a fact.

It's infested with Bostonians. ;-)

Write down the lies you are talking about.

Claiming trump's mother caused trump eligibility questions!

How many more do you need? Cruz supporters ignore that Cruz is not eligible and either the Gope will strip him of his delegates or the liberals will expose him.

Born in Canada is not natural born... but hey it will be somebody else that will get the blame.

Reality stinks for some, being prepared for reality is ‘conservatism’.

Happy, happy, happy!

Not much has been said about Phil Robertson's appearance and endorsement last weekend. I think it (his wisdom) added more to the Cruz tally than people realize.

Said to point out Trump's hypocrisy.

Cruz's mother = American.

And Cruz's father... [Let's unpack that a bit]

"....But look closer at the bolder portion. It never says that the father has to be a citizen of the United States at the time the child is born. All it says is that citizenship "shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been resident in the United States." It is indisputable that Rafael Cruz was in the United States for a period of time prior to both Ted's birth and his marriage to native born American citizen Eleanor Elizabeth Darragh Wilson in 1969. He fled Cuba in 1957 at the age of 18, arriving in Texas. There, he attended the University of Texas, graduating with a degree in mathematics in 1961. He even married his first wife there, Julia Ann Garza, in 1959. They later divorced, but not before he had two daughters with her. He was also granted political asylum in 1961 upon his graduation from UT."....

ew Hampshire\s problem is worse.

A 3rd place finish in NH would be a victory for Cruz.

Iowa was essentially a three-way tie, in a state where it was repeatedly said “Trump has no ground game”.

The real test will be “Super Tuesday”.

I’m wondering how much of that “record turnout” was Democrats crossing over to vote for Rubio?

With Clinton and Sanders being so close, it will make it more likely that Dems will stay in their own race.

I was born in Germany, to two US citizen parents. I am NOT natural born. I have known this longer than Cruz has been here on God's green earth. I learned ‘original intent’ of natural born means one must be born on US soil. Why do you think Trump got the Obama crew to produce a born in Hawaii birth certificate.

Trump was born on US soil, both of his parents were US citizens before he was born.

What Cruz claimed was a LIE and he knew it being that he is a HarvardLawSchool graduate.

Ted can't compete in the general.

Trumpezoid facts. One trumpster tells his trumpy friend, who repeats it to two other trumpeenies, who then tells four more trumpods, then it becomes a trumpism.

There's no basis in reality for the statement. Cruz polls better than Trump in the general. Trump has the highest negatives in the race by far.

“I think your problem is with God and not Cruz.”

He was poking at Cruz, not God. Cruz if not fully divine yet. Rush Limbaugh has him at about 80%, apparently.

The divine don’t pray to God and thank him for his blessings.

The divine think they are the source of the blessings. Ask Trump where his “blessings” come from...

Vote tally is 171,303. That seems to be such an overly small number of votes to justify such a large amount of importance. As one reporter admitted, Iowa is not representative of anything.

Thank you for the info.

I woke up and tuned to Fox and saw the banner - Cruz Wins Iowa - then stayed awake to watch his speech.

It was grand.

“The divine don’t pray to God and thank him for his blessings.”

As in Jim Bakker?

The divine also don’t lie, as when Ted Cruz told the voters that he was liquidating his assets to finance his campaign, or lie by not telling Texans he was a Canadian citizen, or refuse to reveal what document he used to obtain a Texas driver’s license, etc, etc.

El Rushbo will be busting his buttons today. He constantly says that if a candidate sticks to a purely conservative platform, America will respond with the votes, but that nobody has had the spine to DO it. Cruz did it, and won fair and square. He’s still my 2nd choice, but he has moved up a bit.

I never expected Rush’s theory to pan out in Iowa. To my mind, Iowans are a different breed of cat; wonderful, salt of the earth, shirt off their back folks; but with a schizo-crazy, fickle, liberal scandinavian-rooted mindset. After spending a lot of time in Iowa in the ‘80s, that’s how I viewed Iowans....like the folks in The Music Man.

But at least for the moment, it looks like I was mistaken. Or was I right after all? Did the pundits say it would be Trump, only to have the zany Iowans swerve the other direction? In either case, it’s a long way from OVER. The fat lady is a long way from singing. Right now she’s only gotten one leg wriggled into her pantyhose.
