Posted on 02/01/2016 3:07:17 PM PST by markomalley

A search shows that nobody's opened up a live thread for tonight's caucuses. So here goes.

Predictions? For both the GOP and Dem nominations?

Eyewitness Accounts? See any funny business going on?

“If I was Trump I would be pretty happy. Strong second in Iowa and big leads in NH and SC. He’s doing well for a first time candidate. I feel pretty good about the whole thing.”

Trump proved that he can’t even win against weak Republicans. How is he going to beat the dems?

And there is no such think as Trump’s “lead”. By tomorrow, Cruz will carve him up like a Thanksgiving Turkey. The leftovers will be for Rubio.

Geze, I honestly don’t know ... For cripes sake, Bernie Sanders - a communist - got half the Dem vote ... in IOWA, no less! This is not the country I grew up in - and I am scared, really scared.

OH my YOU Trumpsters just can’t help yourselves with your nastiness....

***

You know, I’m not gonna argue with you that there are some very nasty people on Trump’s side on this site. Hell, I’m probably one of them, try as I might to match my venom to the post I’m replying to.

But it’s not like everyone who claims to support Cruz is as pure as the driven snow either.

Yes Trump spoke of course about himself...but he graciously congratulated Cruz.....I thought he did very well in conceding as he did....and there's very little I like about the man.

“How many of trumps supporters would have lost the farm betting on his victory in Iowa”

Maybe a few.
Most of us knew it would be close for reasons that should now be obvious.

I didn’t watch it, but I take your word for it.

Rube, the used car salesman, certainly has the buzzwords down, huh?

..further his Amendments often stopped bills passing......you need to look further on how Washington works.

I know how Washington works. I'm just trying to find a Cruz supporter who can describe exactly what Cruz did during the Gang-of-Eight debate that amounted to a poison pill.

Can you tell me what Cruz amendment(s) amounted to a poison pill for the Gang-of-Eight amnesty bill?

I thought it was Trump supporters who hated Cruz...just reading the threads here.

The time will come when beating Shillary will hopefully bring out our better selves and bring us together for the love of our nation.

I also congratulate Cruz for his victory tonight. It saddens me to see Free Republic bitterly divided between Cruz and Trump. As a Trump supporter, I could easily settle for Cruz as a consolation prize should he beat Trump fair and square. As for Rubio, I consider him GOPe and would much prefer Trump or Cruz to him (even Carson or Rand Paul). I've supported GOPe candidates in the past (after they got the nomination) but would like the opportunity to vote for an actual conservative in the general election. I haven't had that opportunity since Reagan, when I was still a young man.

That said, I will support whoever the Republicans nominate against who the Democrats have up. Bernie Sanders and Shrillary, are you kidding me? We must beat either of these guys in November.

Right now Shrillary and Bernie are pretty much 50-50 in Iowa. I'm laughing at that. In 2008, the much ballyhooed Clinton had her head handed to her by a community organizer out of Chicago. Now she has her hands full with a full-blown washed up socialist from Vermont. Is she not the worst presidential candidate ever?

Well maybe Jebbie Bush can give her a run for the money. I think the former frontrunner is struggling to maintain 3% of the vote tonight. I think Barbara Bush needs to intervene and save her son from further embarrassment, don't you think?

So onto New Hampshire we go. It's 8 days away and I guess anything could happen, even though Trump is currently up by a huge amount. I think Trump gave a very gracious speech tonight. Hey Trump supporters, look on the bright side. He only lost by about 6,000 votes and he only has one less delegate than Cruz. So basically a tie heading into New Hampshire - where 16 more delegates are at stake, I believe.

Maybe the loss will do Trump some good in the long run. Just like it did with Reagan in 1980. We shall see.

May the best conservative win...this is just the beginning.

And Iowa, no offense, but I'll be glad to have you guys in my rear view mirror for the next four years. It's been a long, strange trip.

Yeah right ... won't matter , Cruz is a small regional candidate .. if Trump loses the nomination , we all lose ...Cruz can't beat the Dims

Cruz has the best organization across the South, best organization period.

You’re right about the speech. Trump congratulated Cruz, thanked the people of Iowa, and made reference to his good friend Huckabee. He also said “everybody” told him not to go to Iowa, but he said, “I have friends in Iowa, and came anyway.” How much better would Cruz have done without the shamiing mailing???

The GOPe will never allow Cruz to be the nominee.

I think the voters have a say in the matter.

I am not trampling on Fred. I am just pointing out that the candidates that freepers favored in 08 did not do well in the primaries.

Look how low the democrat turnout was.

Was it turn out or vote switching? I don't believe in swarm behavior. Sounds like some other ground game was going on.

Those numbers need an explanation.
