During a recent visit to the United States, a United Nations (UN) working group has said that the US should consider giving long overdue reparations to descendants of slaves. The group also suggests the US government establish a national human rights commission, and publicly acknowledge that the Transatlantic Slave Trade was a crime against humanity.
The UN working group, called "Experts on People of African Descent," went on a fact-finding mission, which included meetings with African-Americans from multiple cities, including Baltimore, New York, and Chicago. Although they won't release their full report until September, each member read a statement to the press. The group stated that they are "extremely concerned about the human rights situation of African Americans." At a press conference, Chairwoman Mireille Fanon Mendes-France compared police brutality against the black community to Jim Crow-era racial violence:
"The colonial history, the legacy of enslavement, racial subordination and segregation, racial terrorism, and racial inequality in the US remains a serious challenge as there has been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of African descent. Contemporary police killings and the trauma it creates are reminiscent of the racial terror lynchings in the past. Impunity for state violence has resulted in the current human rights crisis and must be addressed as a matter of urgency."
Some members expressed shock at the revelations they experienced during their trip.
"It's very easy in the United States for African Americans to be imprisoned, and that was very concerning," said South African Sabelo Gumedze, a member of the United Nations group.
The group also said they find the lack of a "national system to track killings committed by law enforcement officials" unacceptable. They also noted that despite initiatives to reduce mandatory minimum sentencing, the war on drugs has "led to mass incarceration that is compared to enslavement, due to exploitation and dehumanization of African-Americans." The group even spoke about the school to prison pipeline, and how it recreates the current situation that African-Americans are in.
The real question is whether the US government will even consider these recommendations. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have both opposed reparations in the past. Even democratic socialist Bernie Sanders called reparations "divisive," and instead suggests that the government improve infrastructure to create jobs in poor areas, and make public colleges and universities tuition-free.
If the current president, and every presidential candidate is in opposition to reparations, it's unlikely we will see many politicians jump in and support this cause. The same UN group also visited the US in 2010, and came to similar conclusions.
The group will release their final findings this September in Geneva, Switzerland to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

I was just going to mention that many other races were slaves. My great grandparents were “indentured servants.” Best damn thing to ever happen to both sides of my family.
So, what about a white family who suffered the lost of their sole income earner — the father — through a crime perpetrated by a black person?
What about Oprah Winfrey?
What about the people who had their businesses burned down by Black Lives Matter?
What about blacks whose family history does not place any family member in American before, say, 1965?
There must be a million examples of how reparations would actually be an injustice. You cannot prove direct damage to and from the guilty and innocent. You cannot prove actual loss (would they have been financially better off in Africa?). Many whites have emigrated here AFTER those historical periods and whose families would have no guilt. They suffer guilt-by-association and the association is their race. That is by definition discrimination.
As mom used to say, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
What about statutes of limitation? What about years of affirmative action? What about....
In 1654, John Casor became the first legal slave in America. Anthony Johnson, previously an African indentured slave, claimed John Casor as his slave.

Perhaps they should focus their "expertise" on Boko Haram, a bunch of "people of African descent" as well.

We’ve been giving reparations in the form of welfare and other tax breaks (EIC etc) since before Lyndon Johnson’s failed War on Poverty. While the net effect had been to continue the practice of slavery through government largesse, the great-great grandchildren of slave descendants are still children because the government has never required them to grow up or become responsible citizens.

Blacks sold other Blacks to the Arab slave traders who sold to European and USA slave traders who sold them to various plantation owners in USA and other Countries.
So agreed, the Blacks of Africa need to pay reparations first to the Blacks they sold to be slaves. The Arabs need pay, especially since they own slaves to this day. etc etc
And when the above two Peoples have paid, then we can see if the Europeans involved owe.
For USA Blacks, cost of upkeep and support (such as 150 plus years of welfare payments and related) need be deducted from the reparations....which considering the number of Blacks still taking from the Public trough, means the USA Blacks owe big time.

pride the Negro man had in taking care of his family &
Johnson bragged that the Democrats would own the Negro vote

grandparents had a few slaves on a plantation down in
Georgia Territory. My great great grandfather was a
Confederate soldier in the Battle of Shiloh; but he did not
“own” any slaves. Most of my people were just about slaves
themselves, hard scrabble Southern farmers who fought the
Yankee soldiers because they were invading their homes. My
parents took me to Shiloh battlefield several times even
when I was a child. The Bloody Pond was still dark, dark,
blood red from the rocks on the bottom of the pond. The
stains aren’t as dark now as they were 65 years ago. Obama
apparently hates white people and has done all in his
power to prove that hate. He can kiss my Rebel ass.
Are more handouts of money gonna take away all the pain that has been genetically transferred to them from their ancestors?
How many more trillions do we need to pony up?
p.s. Damage, pain and suffering to others races (and to Blacks) need also be billed to USA Blacks.
So if every Black paid, oh say, $50 million, that should be reasonable.
Still want “reparations”?
If the UN/Obama tries this, there WILL be a CW II, with the North, South, East, and West all joining together.
I have a better idea: cut off all the welfare freebies and boot out the UN.
