Why the Fourth Most Popular Candidate in Iowa Is in First Place
Weekly Standard ^ | John McCormack | Jan 31, 2016

Des Moines - In the final Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll, Donald Trump leads the field at 28 percent with Ted Cruz in second place at 23 percent and Marco Rubio in third at 15 percent.

What's remarkable is that Trump is leading despite fact that's he's a deeply polarizing figure among Republicans: Nearly half of likely caucusgoers (47 percent) view him unfavorably, while 50 percent view him favorably. Trump's +3 favorability rating is well behind the favorability ratings of Ben Carson (+50), Marco Rubio (+49), and Ted Cruz (+37). Polling analysts note this is highly unusual:

...

"It makes you scratch your head," J. Ann Selzer, the pollster who conducted the Des Moines Register survey, tells me. "The field is so big--that's part of it. You've got more popular candidates not getting the first-place vote."

The poll found that Trump would lose a two-man race against Cruz by 18 points--53 percent to 35 percent. Close to a majority of Iowa caucusgoers (48 percent) have become less comfortable with Trump winning the GOP nomination. And the largest percentage of caucusgoers (37 percent) said the nomination of Trump would be "not OK" with them. (Just 20 percent said the same of Cruz and 15 percent said the same of Rubio.)

Or maybe the miserable liberal coward is actually unpopular out in the rest of the country...

The man had the highest unfavorable rating since that was first recorded...

And even with that and his laundry list of a liberal record, you folks still follow dear leader right off the cliff...

Please think VERY carefully before voting for the charlatan Donald Trump.

“You’ve got more popular candidates not getting the first-place vote.””

What? If they were “more popular,” don’t you think they would be in first place? I just wished you’d get a zot for taking up too much FR bandwith with your “Mark Levin Untruthful Fairytale Chart” that you put up here ad nausium!

Barf.

To compare a solid, descent man like Ted Cruz to that snake Donald Trump...

Might as well be voting for Romney or McCain with the record Trump has...
Heck, on many issues Trump is in lockstep with Hillary herself...

“That was Bob Dole. He didn’t work out all that well.”

Well, yes. But Bog Dole wasn’t polarizing!!! That seems to be the point of this post.

As the field thins, would you expect the supporters of the candidate(s) dropping out to gravitate towards the more or less popular remaining candidates? I would think more popular.

They really don’t get it.

We don’t really like Trump. After all, he’s not real likable.

But we think he can break the status quo, and that HAS to be broken!

If the facts never confirm to your theory, then the theory is wrong (unless it’s the utter morons at National Review).

Fact: Trump now leads in every recent IA poll, sometimes by 7-9 points. (According to CNN poll tonight, not yet posted, his lead is growing!).

Theory: Trump is “unpopular.” (Corrolary: Cruz and even Yeb must be “popular” because they trail).

These don’t jibe. The theory is obviously wrong but the UTMOs (utter morons) can’t accept that. (I have explained in detail plenty of times why Trump’s “unfavorables” are show biz unfavorables like JR Ewing is “unpopular,” or Richard Petty, or “the Undertaker” in WWF). Some people go “boooo!” Then they buy the action figure or the Petty jacket.

It’s the lice! They never bathe. They are like the French in that regard.

Agreed. I am sick of all this crap from the usual suspects on here who just want to attack and lie. Both sides do it and those who do only embarrass themselves.

I suspect some of them are paid lobbyists.

Look, folks, people are scared, maybe even terrified at what appears to be the impending devolution of our country into a quasi-socialist mediocrity. And they are looking for a heroic champion who will destroy those people and institutions which are taking the country down.

The problem is, they are latching onto Trump because he presents this image of being tough and a consistent winner who will be their champion. The problem is, they are projecting onto Trump that he represents their values and beliefs and will stay true to what he is now saying. I say this is a huge and childish confidence and that I will be astonished if he does that. I’ll stick with someone who has lived his whole life fighting for Constitutional principles, limited government, and our individual liberties.

Hmmm, is it my imagination, or might they both have a special "in" w CNN?

(Corrections invited, just going on superficial observation here.)

Even Obama managed to sort of produce an American birth certificate.

Yeah, an obvious PDF "photoshop" job that anyone can deconstruct and view the forger's handiwork.
