Cruz Right, Trump Wrong On Ethanol

It has been said that if we were getting so-called “alternative” energy from potatoes instead of corn, the first primary/caucus would be held in Idaho instead of Iowa. As it is, ethanol from corn in the first state where votes are actually cast in a presidential election has led to endless political pandering in support of a fuel that consumes more energy than it provides, is difficult to transport, reduces car mileage, can damage auto enegines, and damages the environment.

Here is the the MIT technology review article to which I referred.

The article makes quite grandiose claims but if he can be credited it would explain a great deal about Obama's election 2008 strategy which led to so many of us being shocked as well as disappointed.

It is food for thought in that it says in effect that the old breakdowns of Democrat/Republican liberal/conservative are not the way to approach elections anymore under this data mining technology.

It also describes the power of data mining to not only determine the facts of individual's voting history but his finances, his television viewing habits and psychological makeup as well. This information was used to construct a model with which to seduce the potential voter and was, of course, disseminated to foot soldiers working for Obama.

Trump knows absolutely NOTHING about this ethanol issue, except that it was an opportunity to pander to Iowans and demagogue Cruz over. Trump reflexively resorted to yet another of his bold faced lies, when I saw him on TV say that Cruz was “totally against ethanol”. Yes, hard to believe, but he just blabbed it out. Cruz fully supports ethanol, as part of the free energy market. No subsidies or mandates for any form of energy.

The Republican congress just last month undid the law that required nation of origin information on meats.

They claim that Canada and Mexico forced it by sueing in the international trade courts.

I think it was corporations and China. I never had a problem buying beef from Canada, but China and Mexico? Good grief. Our politicians don’t give a damn about us.

No. The discussion was about the Cruz campaign sending out those deceptive letters. I don’t care if it is legal, it is deceptive and an attempt to exploit voter ignorance. Did you notice the envelope? Sort of like the scam technique people use by claiming to be calling from the IRS. And then you start giving us the history of new campaign techniques. That is another concept entirely.

Yeah, I know. Every time I mention to a poster about Cruz supporting the Obama agenda with TPA and the Corker bill, they will reply with an off-the-cuff comment Trump made 20 years ago.

Just Friday, Rush recounted for the hundredth time (and hissing the words for effect) that the Establishment literally despises Cruz, hates Cruz, wishes Cruz was dead, because, by golly, when Cruz takes a stand, he is like a rock, and he does NOT make deals!!!!!! Rush, Levin, and everyone that has a national microphone, refuse to remember that Cruz knows how to, and did, play ball with the Establishment on those two critical bills.

It is all about immigration. Trump is the first one to deal with it head on and out loud in his official campaign. He took his stand when he announced, the only one to do so. If immigration is not stopped, AND reversed, all those fine points of pure conservatism that you cherish, and rightly so, will be, in 10 years, gone forever.

When Ted Cruz visited Iowa earlier in the year he rejected the mandate that gasoline contain ethanol, the so-called Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), in favor of letting the consumers decide if they wanted to use gasoline cut with ethanol. With the end of RFS, the subsidies that make the boondoggle a lucrative money extraction device for large agribusinesses would also come to an end. Since Cruz has been campaigning in Iowa, he has been dogged by a group owned by ethanol rent-seekers and run by the son of the Iowa governor bitching about how Cruz is threatening their gravy train.

You can see that my references to illegality-or the absence of illegality-were not introduced to exonerate Ted Cruz. I had already stipulated that the mailing was a "mistake" (the direct question asked of me) and "unseemly." I do not think it is illegal.

In that context the article to which I referred makes note of a whole new technology which certainly invades privacy to a greater degree and I made reference to an ongoing practice of advising doorbell ringers of the voting characteristics of the people they will call on. This is a perfectly legitimate distinction to make. The reference to the MIT Technology Review article was perfectly germane.

I reacted (1) because there was no specific allegation in your post and (2) you juxtaposed my criticism of supporters of Donald Trump with criticism (at least implied) of me which seems to object to an alleged defense of Ted Cruz.

Therefore I concluded that the implied criticism was unspecified and raised in defense of Donald Trump. If that was not the intention then I withdraw the observation as it applies to you in that particular exchange, but I make the observation as a general truth applying to the repetitive behavior of many Trump supporters in this forum.

The above link is to a video where an Iowa farmer confronts Cruz about taking away the ethanol subsidies. Cruz calms him down, and then explains how “there will be no bigger fighter for farmers than me.” Talks about the EPA, water, and death taxes.

Then spends a bunch of time about how removing the subsidies, AND removing the mixture limits (”blend wall”) for ethanol will open up the ethanol market on the free market. Cruz goes into different vehicles using the mid-level fuel amounts. Etc. Pretty amazing his knowledge.

Cruz says “Go talk to him (pointing) - he builds most of the ethanol plants - he’s for me.”

How about growing corn, feeding cattle and bringing beef prices down. Milk costs twice as much per gallon as gasoline.
