Russian Fighter Conducts Dangerous Intercept of U.S. Recon Jet
Washington Examiner ^ | 1/28/16 | Bill Gertz

A Russian Su-27 jet fighter came within 20 feet of a U.S. RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea on Monday in Moscow's latest military provocation involving dangerous aerial encounters.

"On Jan. 25 an RC-135 aircraft flying a routine route in international airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 in an unsafe and unprofessional manner," Navy Capt. Daniel Hernandez, chief spokesman for the U.S. European Command, told the Washington Free Beacon. "We are looking into the issue."

Defense officials said the Su-27 flew alongside the RC-135, an electronic intelligence-gathering aircraft, and then performed what they said was an aggressive banking turn away from the intelligence jet.

The thrust from the Su-27 "disturbed the controllability" of the RC-135, said one official familiar with details of the incident.

A second official said the reconnaissance aircraft was flying 30 miles from the coast--well within international airspace and far away from any Russian territory--at the time of the encounter.

:: then performed what they said was an aggressive banking turn away from the intelligence jet ::

I hope the American sent the Ruskie away with the standard “single-finger” salute!

Piffle.

It seems the new breed of USAF pilots are, as well.

My son is currently training for USMC for striker jets. (see profile)

Who has the ping list I need to be on?

If the Russian was banking sharply he wouldn’t have seen the finger salute and anyway he intended to lash the RC-135 with his bow wave, and did. Shook up the Boeing.

So our aircraft over the Black Sea are unescorted?

Do you think it won’t happen because he is in the office, and if they do it his first year, how should he respond besides calling it a stupid move?

And the US wouldn't be a "touchy bunch" if it were Russia flying recon in the Gulf of Mexico?

The US didn't get overly concerned with the Russians circling around Guam - this despite the fact that the TU95 is a nuclear capable bomber whereas the RC135 is a converted cargo plane. How would you feel if the US was flying B52s around Russian occupied Crimea instead of RC135s?

the airframes themselves are aging, but virtually every version in the fleet has undergone extensive upgrades, from electronics to operator stations and engines. Chances are that aircraft was an RC-135 V/W “RIVET JOINT” aircraft. If you’re interested, here’s a good link:

Careful there. You’re supposed to pretend that grania isn’t Russian.

I’ll check it out, I remember looking up that plane in my AFJROTC days back in HS, I do miss the SR-2 Blackbird I saw that plane fly one time, it was ahead of its time.

Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.

magslinger < thats the guy with the list.

don-o, you must be a proud papa. Here is to your son having the best CiC the US has ever seen in a little over a year.

Good luck to your fledgling.

You are welcome.

Note to others: I copy and pasted from magslinger about the Navair ping list. It is his list, but my post did not format well. Sorry for any confusion.

RC-135s are continuously updated. At least one aircraft from the fleet is always at the L-3 facility in Greenville, Texas for upgrades to their communications and collections systems. There’s never any shortage of money for new hardware and software for Rivet Joint.

"Why is the AirForce allowing the Russian’s to play these dangerous games with our surveillance aircraft?"

This has been going on for 50 years. It's not unusual.

We were 30 miles from their beach.

He just came out to play tag. We do it often ourselves.
