Former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole is warning GOP voters that putting Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at the top of the ticket would be "cataclysmic" for the party.
"If he's the nominee, we're going to have wholesale losses in Congress and state offices and governors and legislatures," Dole, who served in the House and Senate for 35 years and won the Iowa caucuses twice, told the New York Times.
"I don't know how often you've heard him say the word 'Republican' - not very often," Dole said, adding, "I don't know how he's going to deal with Congress. Nobody likes him."
Catherine Frazier, a spokeswoman for the Cruz campaign, called Dole's comments part of the "same flawed narrative the Washington establishment has unsuccessfully pushed for years."
The 92-year old former Kansas senator, who was defeated by Bill Clinton in the 1996 presidential election, said he questions Cruz's allegiance to the Republican Party and his ability to work with Congress.

Wait, I'm confused. So Dole DID endorse Cruz, right?
Hillary and Bill?
“I don’t know how he’s going to deal with Congress. Nobody likes him.”
Using a comment from that old POS LBJ, “They will do what they’re told because I have their peckers in my pocket.” Trump will publically eviscerate them if they give him any trouble. That’s why the GOPe has begun their “a$$ kissing attempts” with Trump now. because they’ve come to terms with reality and they are trying to salvage some miniscule measure of control.
....and Bob Dole was soooo good for the party. Right!
“...and Bob Dole was soooo good for the party. Right!”
And so was his wife. (s)
Uh oh. President Dole knows what he is talking about when he says that the Republicans must nominate a moderate in order to win. Just ask President McCain and President Romney.
I have an idea. Let’s try nominating an unabashed Conservative for once and see what happens?
Exactly. One of many reasons to vote for Cruz is to send the GOP a message loud and clear.
Bob Dole is 92. He’s a “party uber alles” dude and an echo of a bygone era.
Out of respect for the fact that he (unlike so many others) is a GENUINE greatest generation war hero, I’ll refrain for saying any more than that Dole’s politics are in large part responsible for how we got to our current sorry state. I would not look to Bob Dole for guidance on how we should fix the damage.
Says the cataclysmic GOPe candidate who lost to Bill Clinton in 1996.
I guess that makes Trump the GOPe’s saviour.
Let's face it - 1/2 of America (at least those who actually remember him) thought Dole died years ago.
Bob McDolney
Yes.
Please read the American Thinker article about Trump having donated to the Karl Rove PAC for McConnell. It appears that Trump is as big a liar as McConnell.

I actually think there are a lot of republicans that liked Clinton. As bad as Clinton was, he would occasionally compromise and bend to some republican legislation when the rats lost power in the congress (and to get something he wanted, of course). Dole did not like Gingrich either, who would play hardball and force Clinton’s hand, unlike most of the wimpy republicans we have in congress today.
And we should listen to Bob Dole, because?
Bob Dole should know about how a particular candidate may be “cataclysmic” for the Republican party.
Had Dole won in 1996 (HA! Fat chance!), the country would never have had to go through the turmoil of the Clinton Impeachment (And Clinton WAS impeached, he was not removed from the office because the Senate did not vote him out).
Shut up and take your Viagra, Bob. Your skill at presidential campaigns isn't needed.
Dole is talking about allegiance to the Republican party as if that’s some determinant of right thinking. The Republican party is simply the other face of the uniparty.
The way things are moving it appears that Trump is now viewed by the Washington cabal as being for sale. Trump’s defense of McConnell and the rest of the establishment along with his dealmaking nonsense is sickening. And I liked Trump along with Cruz early on.
I’d vote for Trump in the general, but I sure hope it doesn’t get to that point. Washington must be rolled back and power must be returned to the States. Cruz (with the possible exception of Paul) seems to be the only candidate who understands this.
That’s the idea.
Dole gets it.
