I just got today's Hotline from National Journal. It is behind a pay wall, but it is worth noting their top story confirms what I have been seeing and hearing. Josh Kraushaar writes,
It's the $64,000 question for establishment-minded Republicans: Would they rather see Ted Cruz or Donald Trump win the Iowa caucuses, assuming none of the more moderate candidates prevail?The Establishment thinking is that if Trump beats Cruz in Iowa, they can then beat Trump with Rubio, Bush, or Christie.In an informal survey of senior GOP strategists, the clear winner was Trump. Their arguments were reasoned but underscored: a) how they're still underestimating Trump; and b) how much they personally hate Cruz to the point where emotion is trumping strategy.

They don’t really want him but are re-calibrating to choose the best worst candidate from their point of view. Trump is a guy with evolving views. So why not think you can further evolve those views to your favor?

The developing feeling among House Republicans? Donald Trump is preferable to Ted Cruz.
"If you look at Trump's actual policies, they're pretty thin. There's not a lot of meat there," says one Republican member in Ryan's inner circle, who requested anonymity to speak frankly about the two front-runners as leadership has carefully avoided doing all week.If Trump were to get the nomination, he would "be looking to answer the question: 'Where's the beef?' And we will have that for him," says the member.
The member says he believes that, when it comes down to it, "almost all of the candidates would subscribe to" the conservative agenda he and the rest of leadership are hoping to advance.
Except, that is, for Cruz.
"Look at the Senate. He hasn't been a team player. He's always been his own person with his own aspirations and his own vision, only concerned with where he wants to go. And, you know, for us, we want to work closely with the president. And with Cruz, there's a question of whether that could happen."
The GOPe has listened to Trump when his cult will not; supports universal healthcare, will “expedite” the illegals back into amnesty here, accepts homosexual marriage, and a list of liberal causes just like the GOPe. Trump praises and funds far-left Democrats and now undermines the conservative in the race.
You should read his article. It could have been written by any number of Davos billionaires. Every Trumpbot argument is clearly smashed by Trump himself.

Why can Mc-Conman do this? Because he has a revered creep — Professor Laurence Tribe, undermining Cruz [regarding natural born status].
Tribe is a creep, Mc-Conman is a creep [who openly declared war against the Tea Party], and they flock together. The ‘G’ OP would rather lose than let Cruz OR Trump win. And those hypocrites will sabotage either of them at the first opportunity.
So, unless Cruz can turn this around, it’s ‘checkmate’. If he wins the nomination, he could lose the race over this one issue alone due to a hypocritical double-standard [in natural born status originalism].
Trump doesn't have any fixed principles, so they think they can lead him around by the nose, or at least cut deals with him.
To Trump supporters this may seem next to impossible, until you consider the fact that he is a narcissist of the highest order. That weakness can be taken advantage of.

Yeah they are with Trump and that’s why they attack him since the beginning. Even after Obama’s State of the Union they attack Trump.
Now they are using Cruz.
Cruz switched his position on the NSA spying right before the last debate. That was a signal to the Establishment that he was with them. Then in the Establishment tradition Cruz attacked Trump.
Regarding Cruz natural born status, we’ve been able to boil it down to two major points ...
1. Original intent. No matter what original intent you look at, Cruz is not eligible.
— Some say ‘must have mother and father — US citizens when overseas.
— Some say ‘must at least have US father when overseas’
— Some insist you must be born in the US.
2. Women Equal.
Now for the ‘women equal’ argument.
As you know, women are treated as equally as possible in the courts these days. That’s what Cruz is banking on — why can’t a mother alone make him qualify?
— But that is not original intent. So while it wins in court, it fails to end the controversy.
That’s it basically.
Ideally, we are best off to have someone absolutely rock-solid as ‘natural born’ by all major definitions.
The only reason we respect Cruz’ argument at all is because he’s such an awsome patriot-scholar in every other respect. Even his arch-enemy Tribe makes that clear.
Thus proving how utterly divorced from reality they have become...
Lesser of the evils, huh?
There is only one anti-establishment candidate remaining in the Republican field and it is certainly not Donald Trump.

Item b) is all the reason in the world to support Ted Cruz.
The GOPe is despised. What could make more sense than going all-in for the one candidate they fear and loathe the most?

That’s because they know Trump has no principles and can be bought and sold. That’s just who he is. If you don’t believe it, you are merely lying to yourself.
He will also be the easiest to impeach when they decide they’ve had enough of his crap.
