Schumer: Trump 'right on the money' defending NY
The Hill ^ | January 17, 2016 | Peter Sullivan

Posted on 01/17/2016 5:32:50 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is slamming Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz for attacking “New York values" and praising GOP rival Donald Trump for defending his home state.

"I'm a Democrat, but Donald Trump did a very good job defending New York," Schumer told host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable" on New York's AM-970 on Sunday.

"I'd like Ted Cruz to go talk about New York values to the firefighters who rushed to the towers on 9/11, and the police and EMTs, to the brave New York police officers who keep our streets safe," he added.

Schumer also noted that Cruz's wife worked for Goldman Sachs.

"Maybe he wants to go to Wall Street and talk about New York values, you know, where his wife worked," Schumer said.

After Cruz attacked Trump this week for representing "New York values," Trump defended himself at Thursday's GOP presidential debate by invoking the city's response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"I think [Cruz] hurt himself and he deserved to, and Trump, gotta give him credit, was right on the money in his response," Schumer said.

Schumer also referred to a New York Daily News front page showing the Statue of Liberty giving Cruz the middle finger.

"He will be now forever on the front page of the Daily News memorialized, because they had the Statue of Liberty, and she made a gesture in Cruz's direction," Schumer said.

As for the Senate, Schumer touted the body's bipartisan work in December, including passage of a transportation bill. Schumer said the work would be a sign of a productive year ahead.

"I think things are going to be a little better in the next 12 months," he said.

Read Post 7 for all the other positions Trump supports. What are we supposed to do - go “eeny, meeny, miney, moe” and just settle on the positions we WANT to believe he will support?

Did Trump donate to Schumer’s campaign as well?

I understand the dreadful calculus of necessity. Cruz knows he is not likely to win the NY State delegates, nor NJ, CT so he can savage NY and smear Trump in so doing so with no cost to himself electorally and he may manage to keep his campaign alive thru Iowa.

The cost is not only measured that way. He has behaved as a cad, attacking people and an entire state that had done nothing to deserve attack. He has raised millions from the NYC corporate world, more than from his entire grassroots network.

Cruz is running for President in a Nation that needs desperately to be healed. A Nation where race, religious and class warfare has been ginned up by the current administration to a fever pace. Instead of showing the Nation that he embraces all of America’s diversity he showed he was willing to sack NY to win a few points on his opponent. I have lost respect for him as a candidate and a man because he put his election above the good of the Nation.

I’m sorry for the folks who claim to live in NYC and hate its guts. NY is a very unique place, lots good, lots not so good and parts that are exceptional and those parts inspire the world. 20% turnout in the last election because people felt hopeless about their choices so take the DeBlasio meme for what it is.

I grew up solidly conservative and Republican in upstate. If Donald Trump knew the state, he’d know it is not solidly democratic.

Why hasn’t anyone held up Ed Koch’s old comments about upstaters being apple knockers as as example of how NYC people look down their noses at other people? That’s not something I want to see in the White House.

Donald Trump most definitely isn’t Mitt Romney or John McCain and Hillary Clinton isn’t Barack Obama.

Whine all you want, but Trump just took NY from Hillary two night ago....

Great insight. He sure did. And can easily finish her off if she is just wounded.

He also mortally wounded Cruz. I voted for Cruz here in Texas when Sara Palin endorsed him. Like him a lot.

I know all sorts of legal codes have changed but at the writing of the constitution, the common meaning of natural-born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens.

This is sort of like when gay meant happy and stoned was something Muslims do to punish people. And don't even say N?gro, the formal term used for a race.

Trump is a fighter and he will pickup any weapon he can to wipeout the competition. Jf you want to turn back the clock on Obama's work this is the type of guy to do it.

‘He has behaved as a cad, attacking people and an entire state that had done nothing to deserve attack.’

Hannity has been nailing it about Cruz and NY values. It was not being a ‘cad’, but hey!

I expect New Yorkers to react with pride. We expect nothing less. He woke them up, challenged their sense of right-and-wrong. Some will end up thanking him for it one day.

And in the meantime, Trump reminded them, New England, and all the US of 9-11 in a profound way. Not even ‘Have You Forgotten’ could have done a better job of bringing us back to basics.

Trump, and Scummer here, are real slime balls for suggesting that Cruz was referring to the heroes of 911, most of whom are conservative! (firemen, policemen and construction workers).

If Cruz did make an error it was in underestimating the sleaziness of his opposition. In other words, he should have spelled it out more clearly so to avoid any BS like this.

TRUMP: And just so - if I could, because he insulted a lot of people. I've had more calls on that statement that Ted made - New York is a great place. It's got great people, it's got loving people, wonderful people.

When the World Trade Center came down, I saw something that no place on Earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than New York. You had two one hundred...

(APPLAUSE)

... you had two 110-story buildings come crashing down. I saw them come down. Thousands of people killed, and the cleanup started the next day, and it was the most horrific cleanup, probably in the history of doing this, and in construction. I was down there, and I've never seen anything like it.

And the people in New York fought and fought and fought, and we saw more death, and even the smell of death - nobody understood it. And it was with us for months, the smell, the air.

And we rebuilt downtown Manhattan, and everybody in the world watched and everybody in the world loved New York and loved New Yorkers. And I have to tell you, that was a very insulting statement that Ted made.

Also from the debate...

CRUZ: there are many, many wonderful, wonderful working men and women in the state of New York. But everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal or pro-abortion or pro- gay-marriage, focus around money and the media.

I love the non-PC conversations that Trump has brought to the table. I don’t thnk any other candidate could have brought them up and then withstood the MSM and social media backlash without dropping out of the race. That said, Trump just isn’t a conservative. I had to vote for the lesser of two evils the last two election cycles and I don’t want to do it again. Rant off.

9-11 was New York’s finest hour.

I feel tingly just remembering what Trump said [and this coming from one of the most rabid New York-bashing critics on earth].

Trump’s poll numbers are outa sight! He’s up to over 100% now.

He’s brilliant, and great. Did I mention he’s great? Greatest evah. He’ll make American greater than evah. You know he’s from New Yawk. Greatest evah. And smart. You know he’s smart, right? He will make America smart again. Smartest evah. And great. And winning. You’ll be sick of winning. Just like his polls, over 1000% now. Everyone loves him. He’s Trump, and he’s great. /sarcasm

Trump supporters don't care that Cruz is correct and Trump isn't. Much like Obama's supporters, they LIKE what Trump is saying and aren't looking beyond that. They are members of the Trump Cult of Personality and any opposition must be destroyed.

Did you EVER think you would see the day when FR "Conservatives" would defend NY Communism? Me neither.

The fact that you have to explain what Cruz meant with his NY City Values comment is direct proof that Cruz got destroyed.

Cruz was left smiling at Trump and applauding him. Polls reflected an increase for Trump and a decrease for Cruz.

Game, set, match!

So now we have Chuckie Schumer, the drive-by media, all the GOPe, Fox News and every important communist left-wing liberal they can find endorsing and singing praises of Trump. In addition, Trump is telling us how liberal republicans will make great VP’s.
I’m awake but I wonder about the rest of the conservatives.

Yeah he became the establishment candidate, lol. Him taking credit for the hostage’s release!!! So rich. And his Huck-like attacks on Cruz. DT looks old and frantic and is not likely to fool primary voters.

‘That said, Trump just isn’t a conservative. I had to vote for the lesser of two evils the last two election cycles and I don’t want to do it again. Rant off.’

He’s more conservative than he lets on. And BTW ... our best conservatives don’t need to be President. They need to help craft constitutional amendments. That’s the end-game:

Cruz: ‘We Need Quite A Few Constitutional Amendments’
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3381654/posts

That’s the main reason why I want Cruz to remain one of the Top Two — he needs as much of a mandate as possible if he loses the nomination.

Just think — when the supreme court is term limited and there’s a check-and-balance on its rulings, then we don’t have to keep sweating bullets all the time when one of them has a head cold.
