Several words have been invented in the past year...conveying Germans, their sarcasm of events, and growing distrust of the gov’t.
Gutmensch: Used as a derogatory phrase over people with unlimited naive behavior and tolerance. Usually the crowd all pepped up on Merkel’s “We can do it” theme.
Gutburger: Same thing as Gutmensch and derogatory.
Merkling: Used by adults and kids. Refers to people who talk about something needing to be fixed or improved, but never actually do anything. Usually suggests to simply watch the problem develop further and see if it gets any worse. Kids use it now to refer to adults, teachers, political folks, and authorities.
Lugenpresse: Used by Germans to refer to state-run news media as liars. Used enough that the state-run news media had to actually go and try to defend themselves....making them look more false and fake than they were before.
Because the newly-arrived Syrians, Afghans, etc. generally aren't very fluent in German. And since the sign-painters don't know any Arabic, etc., they wisely shift to English. Very pragmatic.
But English also has the added cachet of being NOT - "shudder" - the despised language of the dreaded Teutons (i.e., their own language), so they can simultaneously celebrate their self-loathing by avoiding their mother-tongue.

It looks like the “Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy” propaganda designed to placate the worries of the West. You can’t share misery and crime if the victims know it is coming. Unfortunately for the invaders, I think a bit of the news has leaked out.
