Hey, Ted Cruz, diss New York and you diss the land of winners
NY Post ^ | 1/15/2016 | Seth Lipsky

Ted Cruz, by my lights, was doing pretty well in this presidential campaign until he started attacking Donald Trump for having "New York values." What in the Statue of Liberty do you figure the tin-eared Texan could've been thinking?

If he was thinking.

Just on the numbers, after all, being a New Yorker is nothing for which any presidential politician needs to apologize. New York has produced more presidents than any other state -- seven out of 43 total. (Yes, Barack Obama is No. 44 -- because Grover Cleveland, an ex-sheriff of Erie County who became mayor of Buffalo and then governor, was both the 22nd and 24th president.)

The list includes three other ex-governors, Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt and Martin Van Buren. Add in the wily Whig, Millard Fillmore, and our one-time port collector, Chester Arthur (who, some insist, was, like Cruz, born in Canada).

To what, if not New York values, does Cruz attribute such electoral success -- the vapors of the Hudson? Could it not be that New York values are actually perceived as a virtue across our glorious land?

It's not entirely clear, either, that The Donald is evincing New York values. He's running a protectionist campaign on trade and immigration. Those planks are about as far from New York values as it's possible to get.

New York's is a capacious and welcoming spirit, symbolized by the Statue of Liberty astride New York Harbor. In rankings of diversity, New York state beats Texas, and New York City tops any major Texas town.

Cruz has lately been grumbling about the neoconservatives (a movement launched largely by New York intellectuals). He lashed out the other day at the "billionaire Republican donors" who "actively despise our base."

LOL....I'm a born and bred Manhattanite, from an "old NYC family", so I DO actually know all about it, its history, and its political history too.

Trump is a Native son, native sons usually win their states in the general. Hillary is a damned carpetbagger ( and she might not even be the DEM nominee )who won't win N.Y. state.

Are you a New Yorker, or do you just know about it.

I think after 7+ years of the great divider, Cruz’s divisive remark will hurt him more than he expects.

Trump’s appeal, proven by the massive turnouts at his rallies, is in uniting people behind the Red, White, & Blue.

Everybody is in a snit fit about values and that is what he said, almost a direct quote of donnie himself.

Besides, I got friends and relatives that live up there and they relish the fact they do have different values. Even those that do not live in the city claim they have different values.

You know as well as I do that it would be a cold day in hell for Cruz to win NY in the general. I would wager donnie will not either.

I just hate the idea that a guy that should be selling watches out of his rain coat is convincing good conservatives that he is one of them. He will be like bringing home a rattlesnake for a pet.

Yes, I am, n00b.

Many aren't REAL New Yorkers, there's a LOT of voting fraud there, sadly, many don't bother to vote, which is how NYC wound up with de Balsio, the stinking COMMIE as mayor.

There are FIVE different boroughs which comprise NYC. Each is almost like a different state. Staten Island is very Conservative. Manhattan is both and depends on which neighborhood one is in, though some are mixed, and FYI....a LARGE portion of Harlem are TRUMP supporters.

Apologies for the unsolicited demographics. And what a disgrace the carpetbaggers were!

Over half a century well east of NYC.

There IS a N.Y. state primary and believe it or not, Cruz did have some supporters, which he now lost, due to his stupid comment.

I’m an ex-pat New Yorker, but I guess, deep; down I still am one. I miss the way it used to be.

It's gonna sting for a bit, that's for sure, but we know what a short attention span the average person has. It'll get buried by emerging events over the next few weeks.

Us political junkies aren't likely to forget it anytime soon.

How many was that? 20? 50?

Cruz was never going to get anything from NY.

Besides, Cruz used donnies own words against him. This is such a no brainer.

Your personal page says that YOU "are a Texan in Mass.".

Most early members of FR didn't bother doing anything with their personal page. I didn't do anything on mine, because I didn't want to post anything there...which makes me neither "lazy" nor "ignorant". OTOH... you're all hat and no cattle.

Didums, I've actually NEVER heard ANYONE, in ANY borough sneer at Texas, Texans, nor "FLYOVER COUNTRY". That's just something that idiot LIBERAL ELITIST printing in their now dying magazines. LOL

Drop the namecalling, it doesn’t help your argument.

NYC may have some conservatives and there is plenty of voter fraud I’m sure. But I’m not buying your argument that the city isn’t majority liberal.

Hitlery is going to need a VERY stiff drink on Election Night! (She may have to get someone to smuggle it in past the warden, though;)

Thing is Cruz aint no hick!

Born in Calgary Alberta Canada, and lived there till 4.

4-18 - Lives in Texas.
18-22 Princeton
22-25 Harvard
25-33 Washington
33-41 Texas
41-45 Washington/Texas

He’s a very serious person, a very intelligent person, and a very religious person. Him playing the everyman card is strange, and that’s not Ted. That’s why he got smoked on the New York thing, yet killed it on the NBC question.

My family was Southern since long before 1776 but after 9/11 I remember being proud to say "ich bin ein" New Yorker and in my heart that has not changed.

I spent a couple of weeks in Manhattan in 1981 and I will never forget the "joie de vivre" simply buzzing all around the greatest city in the world.

You are very wrong, but, bless your heart...and a place we can agree to disagree. If, Trump gets the nod I will vote for him of course. I just think that Cruz with real fire in his belly would be a more reliable conservative. I am tired of the Doles, Bushes (all of them), the McCains and the Romneys. Our country seems to be at maximum free fall velocity and something has to give. I can see Cruz doing a HALO, but, not Trump. And I am being optimistic.
