Tom Douglas going straight to $15/hour, adding 20% service charge at 3 restaurants [Seattle]

Say goodbye to tipping at Tom Douglas' Dahlia Lounge, Palace Kitchen and The Carlile Room.

The entirety of the 20 percent service charge "will be redistributed to our team through wages, commissions and benefits," Douglas said in a news release. Among the goals of the change, he said, is to "provide greater compensation equity for front of house and back of house." (The company said it based the 20 percent figure on average customer tips over the past three years.) And while Douglas's take on Seattle's $15-an-hour minimum wage has not necessarily been positive in the past, he promised, "We are committed to everyone on our team making $15 or more immediately instead of following the schedule as laid out in the Seattle ordinance regulations."

He’ll be out of business by this time next year. Bet on it.

He'll be out of business by this time next year.

Not in Seattle/Bellevue/Redmond. Customers ("clients" in the high end) could absorb triple the cost of admission.

SO basically they are "going out of business"?

King Opie’s “Fundamental Transformation” looks surprisingly similar to bankruptcy.....

I read an article about a fancy cafe in Massachusetts doing something similar. Wait staff aren’t getting tips anymore, but will be at seventeen bucks an hour next year.

The menu was linked to the piece. Six bucks for oatmeal, ten for scrambled eggs, eleven for a salad and upward from there.

No thanks. Wanna bet many of their patrons live paycheck to paycheck and wonder why?

Okay so folks that do decide to eat there won’t be leaving tips for the staff. The idea of having 20% added to your bill regardless of service is out of line. I wonder how long he’ll stay in business since the restaurant business in Seattle is highly competitive.

Looked up the menu for one of the places. Hamburger from $18.00, Frito Pie 15.00, Chicken $25.00. Not that hungry? Soup’s only 14.00, green beans $12.00. Raw scallops are $14.00. Don’t know how much they are if you want them cooked.

By the way - no free wi-fi, so McDonalds has a competitive advantage for the burger.

No thanks.

I’ll stick with a ChickFillA

in Mid-America, not the Left Coast.

That’s really stupid...what a lost opportunity.

They could’ve doubled food prices on the menu at the same time. Think how much money the restaurants could be making.

Same with this place....looks like high end food.

Wonder how the dining crowd takes this.....20% surcharge.

Let's say your meal is $30..and you have a date. So that's another $30...and they are going to tack on $12...to your bill. Won't be any tip..from me...if I was going to eat there.

I'd guess...the owner will have some problems going forward,,,,
