~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Station Mayport, Florida

Naval Station Mayport is a United States Navy base in Jacksonville, Florida. It contains a protected harbor that can accommodate aircraft carrier-size vessels, ship's intermediate maintenance activity (SIMA) and a military airfield with one asphalt paved runway.

Since its commissioning in December 1942, NS Mayport has grown to become the third-largest naval surface fleet concentration area in the United States. Mayport's operational composition is unique, with a busy harbor capable of accommodating 34 ships and an 8,001-foot runway capable of handling most aircraft in the Department of Defense inventory.

Naval Station Mayport is also home to the Navy's United States Fourth Fleet, reactivated in 2008 after being deactivated in 1950.

The base has historically served as the homeport to various conventionally powered aircraft carriers of the Atlantic Fleet, including Shangri-La (1960 - 1971), Franklin D. Roosevelt (1956 - 1977), Forrestal (1977 – 1993), Saratoga (1957 - 1994), and, most recently, John F. Kennedy (1995 - 2007).

With the decommissioning of all conventionally powered aircraft carriers by the U.S. Navy, no carriers are presently assigned to Mayport. However, both houses of Congress have passed legislation authorizing about US$75 million for dredging and upgrades at NAVSTA Mayport to accommodate a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

On January 29, 2010, the Quadrennial Defense Review Report stated that a nuclear aircraft carrier would be homeported at NAVSTA Mayport. The action will help protect the fleet against a potential terror attack, accident or natural disaster, because all east coast aircraft carriers are currently based at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, according to the report.

A 2013 report from the Navy revealed that Navy considered basing as many as 14 littoral combat ships at NS Mayport. Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 2 was established at the base on November 7, 2014. USS Little Rock (LCS-9) and USS Sioux City (LCS-11) are among the squadron's ships.

Yes, I also had a Sister who worked Summers at Hurlburt Field while they were training Cubans for the Bay Of Pigs fiasco. She was attending Florida State at the time.

I think John flew out of Guantanamo and Roosevelt Roads during the Cuban Missile Crises. He told me they flew so low over the Russian ships that some of them threw garbage at them. On the other hand he said some of them would wave to them.

Several years ago, it was colder here than it was in Anchorage almost the entire winter. Kathy kept telling me to send winter back and no matter how hard I huffed and puffed, it just wouldn’t go back. LOL!

Y’all got snow before we did this winter. We’ve just had a couple of flurries so far and it looks like we might get a few tonight.

I'm doing well. Kathy's hoping for snow and I'm watching my snow melt away, thankfully.

You usually get snow in your neck of America?

I think we’re done with the snow thingy for a while, but the way this year has gone [or rather this winter] anything can happen! LOL!

Our 6-8” snowfall week before last sure as heck surprised us! :O

Good to hear you're doing well and getting rid of some of that snow. Kathy needs it so she can drive easier and to brighten things up up there. Too dark when there's no snow.

We don't get much snow here and when we do, it doesn't stick around long. But the cycle's moving back to the way it was when I was a kid and we had lots of snow and it stayed. We spent a lot of time sledding and kids these days don't get to do that.

Bad thing about it is I don't like cold weather any more now that I'm old . LOL

No melting, we are in the middle of a cold snap.
