Florida doesn’t require a ‘license’ to own a firearm.

Nor should it.

Open carry is generally illegal in Florida currently. You can if you are hunting or fishing.

Can’t go to Walmart with one on display.

The last I heard, the Florida Sheriffs Association have agreed to be neutral on this issue.

Quite the opposite. The FSA has come out against this, and pantywaists like Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri has been an outspoken opponent of open carry.

I like the idea of additional protections with printing or accidental exposure, but I'll continue to carry concealed until I see a larger adoption of open carriers.

Open carry when afield, of course. That is legal and smart.

Uniform cops don’t carry concealed, because they are already in a police uniform. Detectives carry concealed, for the benefits that brings.

I’m not saying it’s not a right to open carry in a public place. I am saying, as a defense tool against the current crop of shoot first perps, it’s legal, but foolish.

It gives away the element or surprise and tells the perps who to shoot first.

It will probably become legal, and also very foolish.

History disagrees with you. Once upon a time, it was considered impolite and roguish to carry concealed weapons. Gentlemen carried their weapons openly and violent crime was virtually nil.

I believe concealed carry favors the untrained. If you're bold enough to carry openly, you better be prepared to use that weapon and shoot true.

According to this article from 10 December, they will support the bill if it includes the four changes described.

>>Now they get street creds for shooting people.

It isn’t a point system. If they set out to shoot someone (polar bear hunting, etc) then they shoot you based on your skin color or clothing.
If they just want some drug money (and that is the majority of robberies), then they look for the weak victim.

But, the FL law will permit either mode of carry. So carry concealed and I’ll carry partially concealed. I’m not planning on carrying some full size handgun on a drop down tactical rig! I’m just planning for a Glock 26 in a pancake.

The open-carrier has just telegraphed his defense capabilities and strategy to the enemy. The open-carrier has simply said “shoot me first.”

This is not necessarily true. You would deny an enumerated constitutional right to your fellow citizen because you deem it to be "shoot me first"? If so, you're as bad as Nanny Bloomberg and Nancy Pelosi, because they, too, have their own 'reasons' for denying Constitutional rights.

Michael Chitwood? Are you kidding me? I haven’t heard that name in years.

More than 20 years ago that jerk was the police chief in Portland, Maine.

He was a colossal ahole gun-grabber back then, and I see that nothing has changed.

Didn't know about his stint in Portland.

Oh, he's much more than just a gun grabber.

A years back somebody was murdering hookers that they picked up on a stretch of US-1 in Daytona. They couldn't figure who the murderer was so Chitwood decided the Daytona PD would stop all males driving alone on that stretch of US-1 and ask for A DNA sample.

If you refused you were threatened with arrest and generally hassled for the duration of the stop. I believe the ACLU sued (or threatened to)and this crap stopped. I believe the murderer was never caught.

Chitwood has done lots of other stupid things too numerous to list, but yet they keep him on. Glad I don't live in Daytona but unfortunately I have pass through there on occasion.

He's an embarrassment to a once great department. No wonder he's earned the nickname Chief $hitwood.

If so, you're as bad as Nanny Bloomberg and Nancy Pelosi....

What an asinine statement. Histrionics like that damage nothing but your credibility.

Would you put our Second Amendment in jeopardy to satisfy your own sense of entitlement?

Whether you like it or not, many Americans are upset by the sight of open carried weapons in otherwise placid settings. And might I remind you that when the Second Amendment was adopted into the Constitution, THERE WERE NO WOMEN VOTERS!

Such pointless displays put ALL OUR gun rights at risk! And with more than fifty percent of the electorate being women, who have ALWAYS prized their sense of security over Liberty, pushing the issue could wind up losing it ALL for us.

Who do you think got Prohibition into The Bill of Rights? That's right. It wasn't a law. IT WAS AMENDED RIGHT INTO THE CONSTITUTION!

With "patriots" like you, who needs "useful idiots?"

OK, I get it. You are willing to sacrifice your Constitutional rights and mine to the "histrionics" of the female electorate. Oooh, we better put those scary guns away, or the females will amend the Constitution to take them away!

It's probably high time this country split anyway. You can stay with the "female histrionics" piece, and I'll be over here, open-carrying my weapon.

However, as a self-defense tactic, it is the worst thing one can do.

It's also bad PR.

I'm constantly amazed at all the people who understand the importance of the Second Amendment forget it was adopted by a government that had no Nineteenth Amendment!

The Second Amendment is NOT a "boys club" that women (who happen to be the majority of the population) can't touch. We would all do well to remember that.

Please read my posts before you criticize them.

Carry open of you choose, I’m not telling anyone that it not their right to do so.

It’s just a very stupid move in 99% of the cases today.

Afield, certainly. But in public, why tell the bad guys who to shoot first.

The story that the perps will see an open carry and be scared away is simply not operational in today’s climate. They would just shoot the open carriers first. An Amish on speed, crank or crack would think shooting such an open carrier first was “fun,” and certainly justified.

Why let an active threat felon see you are a danger to them until before the instant you double tap them.

No, your open carry will not scare them away.

I see by your response that despite the “face saving,” you comprehend the gravity our situation.

That’s all one can ask.

You are much wiser than I gave you credit for, and did not deserve my harsh words. For that I humbly apologize, and ask your forgiveness.

Put your glock in your front pleated pants pocket, and when you draw on them, when they are distracted by someone else in the crowd, someone you “see” over their shoulder, or your “mistakenly dropped” wallet, they’ll have about 1/20 of a second to be very surprised, before they aren’t very anything.

Boldness and training are two separate things.

Decide now that when the time comes that you must shoot to save the life of yourself or another person, that you will react violently enough soon enough.... but don’t telegraph your moves early by open carry.

Open carry, in 2015 American street self defense situation? legal but foolish.

The other problem with open carry in 2015 is that the other side would simply go to the car, get his AK, drive by and shoot you, just for the fun of it.

That’s what the streets are like today.

I stopped a robbery once by just showing the robber a gun and telling him to go away. Not saying that it would ever work like that again, but not every robbery is the holdup in Pulp Fiction.

I also don’t wear pleated pants. They make you look like you are wearing a diaper. I’ve been carrying licensed and concealed for over 20 years and I have my tactics worked out. I always make a plan, check out the entry and exit points. I always sit with my gun away from the aisle and will wait for a booth for as long as it takes. As I said, even if I open carry, the gun will be mostly concealed (unless the law specifically forbids it in a full open or fully concealed choice only). If partially concealed is not legal under the law, I will simply stay with fully concealed.
