~ The FReeper Canteen Presents ~

~ Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 ~

On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.

DAY OF INFAMY
7 December 1941

"DAY OF INFAMY" SPEECH
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
8 December 1941
(Click)

"Yesterday, December 7, 1941 ~ a date which will live in infamy ~ the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And, while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island.
And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has therefore undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation. As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense, that always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people, in their righteous might, will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.

Good evening, JimSEA...I can’t take his “fingernails-on-the-chalkboard” blather. He wouldn’t know the truth if it bit him in the a$$.

Thank God for our military men and women, and for the jobs they have done in the past and continue to do without support of their government.

Thank you for your support of our heroes.

While not a fan of FDR, the “Day of Infamy” speech is such a stark contrast to the garbage spewed tonight by the current occupant of the White House.

Exactly, FRiend - I was going to add words to that effect but I decided to let the man speak his piece without comment.

"I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender
the members of my command while they still have the means to resist."

(GENTLE HUG & CHASTE SMOOCH RETURNED)

Doing well. Deliberately missed O'Bama's speech. (My sock drawer needed sorting.)

I've been prepping Rockumentary for next weekend and the big New Years Eve thread with the #1 songs for every New Years from 1959 to 1988. Plus I'm doing a different approach for the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day threads this year.

Busy, busy, busy!

Next week will be fun, especially the story of the Classics IV. The year 1968 was the year of the Great R&B Revival, and there is a lot of interesting material coming up.

Christmas will be completely different from the last few years. I've managed to locate quite a bit of Baltimore Consort material. They are a Renaissance music group, and material from their Christmas disk is now available on You Tube.

After doing the Top 25 of 2014 last year, and catching absolute holy hell for putting that kind of music on FR, I'm doing classic rock on New Years. I'm stopping at 1988 because there was so little good material after that year.

And then in mid-January, Luvvie Sue and I are doing the anniversary of Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall concert from 1938. This is some of the best material from the Swing Era.

I'm keeping the Canteen classy.
