EPA boosts amount of ethanol in gasoline supply

The Obama administration is boosting the amount of corn-based ethanol and other renewable fuels in the U.S. gasoline supply despite sustained opposition by an unusual alliance of oil companies, environmentalists and some GOP presidential candidates.

The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday issued a final rule designed to increase production of ethanol to be blended with gasoline through 2016, a decision that could reverberate in Iowa's crucial presidential caucuses.

The agency said it will require more than 18 billion gallons of renewable fuels in 2016, most of it ethanol. The amount is less than was set in a 2007 renewable fuels law, but is more than was proposed by the EPA in May. The agency said that the demand for gasoline has risen since May, increasing the amount of renewable fuels that can be blended in. ...

When are the American people going to get the message that the EPA is killing America’s competitive advantage in the world. We need to consider limiting the EPA’s power and, possibly, the EPA all together.

I have replaced a couple of small engine carburetors because of ethanol damage. I also have a fleet of vehicles in excellent repair from the 90s, and this crap is doom to the fuel systems. I currently run no ethanol gasoline in them, but pay more for the fuel, almost a buck a gallon.

Bad fuel or worse? It's what happened to high compression muscle car engines when unleaded became the rage.

It looks like I will be a 93 E Free buyer from now on.

I’m getting a new vehicle to replace the one that I was sunk with back in the flooding and I will do everything I can to run that fuel.

The old stuff when it runs, gets ethanol free anyway.

Marinas sell recreational gas which is ethanol free. The higher cost is worth having reliable small engines.

“Monsanto”

Sure. But the real culprits are Congress and Midwest Farmers. Congress has made whores out of the farmers - and conversely the farmers have discovered they really, really like the work.

Anyone else experiencing a black mildew growing around the filler cap inside the lid on cars since ethanol came in?

That area seems to be a filth collector, though I wonder if it has less to do with ethanol and more to do with being a semi confined area that gets a lot of gasoline splashes and environmental water. Ethanol isn’t the only thing that attracts dirt and can support micro-organisms. Prior to the ethanol rage, gas fillers also didn’t use to use the modern “safety” design and were not behind doors.

It could equally be said the farmers offered themselves to such prostitution.

There are lists, too, of gas stations that carry non ethanol blends. It could take some looking. Pure-gas.org.

I don’t recall having to scrub inside the filler door before then, though.

Pure gas doesn’t list airports. Many of the the small local airports have avgas which doesn’t have ethanol either. Neither aircraft engines nor outboard engines tolerate ethanol.

I had to become very proficient at rebuilding small 2-cycle carburetors. Thin film gaskets, fuel lines get eaten up and small fuel inlets and vias get clogged. So got the tools to help rebuild them and got to be able to find carb kits for all of my stuff.

I finally found on Amazon where I can get a whole replacement carburetor for under $15.....beats buying a new trimmer every year.

Living in Florida, you should buy a case of SEA FOAM off Amazon and dose your tanks with it following instructions while you’re using it. When you put it up for the winter, empty out the tank and run it dry until it quits.

On the chipper shredder, that’s likely 4 cycle....you could rebuild the carburetor pretty cheaply.
