John McCain and Lindsey Graham call for 20,000 troops in Syria and Iraq

Two senior senators called on Sunday for Washington to nearly triple military force levels in Iraq to 10,000 and send an equal number of troops to Syria as part of a multinational ground force to counter Islamic State in both countries.

Republicans John McCain and Lindsey Graham criticised Barack Obama's incremental Islamic State strategy, which relies on airstrikes and modest support to local ground forces in Iraq and Syria, and said the need for greater US involvement was underlined by this month's Paris attacks.

"The only way you can destroy the caliphate is with a ground component,"said Graham, who is seeking his party's presidential nomination. "The aerial campaign is not turning the tide of battle."

McCain, chairman of the Senate armed services committee, recently proposed intervention in Syria by a European and Arab ground force backed by 10,000 US military advisers and trainers.

On Sunday, he and Graham told reporters during a visit to Baghdad that US personnel could provide logistical and intelligence support to a proposed 100,000-strong force from Sunni Arab countries like Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Graham said special forces would also be included.

If Linda Graham called for anything, it was because McCain shoved his hand back up Linda’s butt and made her mouth move!!

That is a great idea. Send all the RINOS and DEMS over. Including DUMBO.

These two should be in a holding facility pending trial for numerous violations of the Patriot Act. Our military and intelligence services have testified that 25% of the “rebels” this couple wants to aid and arm are AL QUADEA!!!

You remember them don't you? Those are the nice folks who decided to remodel downtown Manhattan for us. Islamic urban renewal I guess is what the politically correct one-worlders would have us call it.

Arming our enemies and their allies...is nothing short of treason. And yet; there they are, the lovely couple all over the media demanding we send more of our kids to fight the scum...THEY F^@&ING ARMED.

This country is suffering from a case catastrophic terminal stupid.

They should be in jail.

He’s playing right into ISIS’s hands. They want us, ultimately, in Dabiq, Syria for their ‘final battle’ to bring about their ‘messiah’.

No, no, no and hell no.
20,000 American men and women to .....
Fight on which side?
Die for which side?
Sunni or Shia?

Anyone in the military should get out as soon as they can.
It is obvious that you will be required to fight (and possibly die) for either Sunni Islam or Shia Islam to have the upper hand ... not for America or Americans.

Is that what you want to possibly die for?

What “air campaign”? Two sorties a day and we tell them when and where they will take place.

These two now want to help the GOP lose the Presidential election. Americans do not want ground troops going in.

If McCain wants to really help, he should send his daughter over there.

Just think how many hungry Syrians she could feed......oh wait, they don't eat pork.

They need more than 20,000, they need 250,000 with good ROE, robust sealift, and goals achievable by killing people and breaking things.

ISIS is an infantry problem.

I saw these two on TV reporting from Iraq.

This is the reason I could never be a drone pilot. It would have been too big of temptation.

Why don’t these two war-monger morons send their extended family members ...and go themselves. Death from sacrificing for syria should haunt their doorsteps.

Most ex-military men are the last to propose going to war. But McCain would go to war over ownership of a cow turd. He wants to remove Assad. Okay, that means allying with ISIS...and taking sides against Russia (and Iran). How can you possibly win in such an equation?

I didn't follow McCain's political career very closely until he ran for President in the 2000 primaries, but from what little I recall he started out as a relatively sensible, realist voice of reason on foreign policy. In the late 1990's, he fell under the wing of the neoconservatives, and has been parroting Bill Kristol's foreign policy talking points ever since.

That accounts for his obsession with Assad - for PNAC, removing Assad and other secular dictators is a higher priority than fighting actual Islamist terrorists.
