A pediatric emergency medicine physician is urging doctors to join the effort for gun control by asking about gun ownership while performing health histories on their patients.

A panel titled “The Tipping Point: Activating a Public Health Movement to Address Gun Violence” was featured at the American Public Health Association (APHA)’s 2015 annual meeting in Chicago earlier in November. The panel called for a view of gun violence as a public health emergency situation.

My reply to my doc was: Under advise of my lawyer, “I claim the right offered to me under the fifth amendment to the US Constitution to refuse to respectfully answer that question”.

“I’ve had the same feeling about Concealed carry permits.”

Yes, they are a “two-edged sword” as is were. Apart from the legal aspects of carrying, any time you’re stopped they know you may have a weapon which puts you in danger.

I thought the libs position was that abstinence education was ineffective and unrealistic...

When people leave the realm of their proper authority and start to encroach in areas that they don’t belong, especially into your own personal and private life, then they no longer deserve the truth. They have given up their honest role and have taken on dishonest identities and roles.

When this occurs, they no longer have the right to the truth and lying to them becomes acceptable.

While I don’t ask my patients gun questions UNLESS they tell me they are suicidal, my pediatrician does ask. I lie. Although technically it is not a lie as I did have that boating accident...

I will give up my license to practice before I do anything that violates my conscience or faith. One cannot be forced to do anything. If one values one’s license over their morals or faith, I pity them.

Tell him this

Though rare, such incidents are not unheard of. Anywhere from 10 to 40 children a year drown in buckets nationwide, according to reports from the Consumer Products Safety Commission. More children die from buckets than bullets ..

You didn't ask me if I own a pool or a bucket. Why not?

Drowning awareness. Prevention and treatment..

You can also say what I heard a woman say to get out of serving on a jury: “I don’t believe in guns.” And they let her walk, no further questions asked. You’re not saying yes or no, or anything at all, really.

How about the Hillary answers: I don’t recall. Followed by: What difference does it make, my server with ALL my weapons was erased.

They were asking those questions 15 years ago.

Just say no.

Sounds good. But at the time I was trying to adopt my granddaugher (the adoption has since been finalized thank God). As it was a hostile scenario terminating the rights of her parents, I did not dare do anything controversial to give the court/social workers/etc a reason to oppose.....

Although in the county I live in gun ownership is probably a plus, I couldn’t afford to take that chance. At this point I will probably revert to leaving the question blank or stating none of your business.....

“When I lived in CA I was asked about gun ownership both times I went to a new doctor. I just said that question was irrelevant to my health and 1 wasn’t going to answer. This was several years ago.”

Yes, we’re aware of that, but so far we haven’t seen any other signs of aggression.

[just kidding, anyway you take back what you’ve already said]

Physician: “Do you own guns?”

Me: “NOYFB” (or simply ‘no” as “none of your business implies yes)

When it comes to the government knowing about your guns, LIE, DEFY, DO NOT COMPLY.

That’s a very good non-answer to give that I will have to remember.

Report them on yelp and other ratings services.

I like your idea, with responses based on the scale of the intrusion. If they ask an adult a question from the checklist, that is different from probing with a child. I simply lie (no guns), or tell a partial truth (bb-gun, it's locked up, but that's not a firearm). If they ask a child, rather than asking the parent, and especially if they are visibly anti-gun, I would consider wrecking their career:

Yelp rating - Dr. Libtard is adequate. If you know what you need and keep him on task, he is licensed to write the prescription you need. However, he strays off topic with the "guns in the home" question when I was there for a flu shot not a gunshot, and even worse irrelevancies. He also gets way too friendly with young children, and I would not be comfortable allowing Dr. Libtard to see my child unless I was in the room.

That review is (1) truthful,(2) harmful to someone who deserves that harm. I'm tired of playing fair with liberals who are both evil and incapable of fairness.

In our part of WV it would be very unusual for someone not to have a gun in the house. Even the libs here are gun owners.

Funny how gun accidents here are just about nonexistent...

“I am still trying to find some hydraulic replenishment fluid for the recoil mechanism for my M-68 105mm rifled cannon and it will be operational soon, but until then I have intersecting fields of fire set up between my Ma-Deuce and the 20mm chain gun mounted in the copula of the garage.

When are we going shooting again? Its been a few weeks.”

Exactly, you get it. I’ve always assumed that ANYTHING that I say to a doctor can get out, and it’s true, just takes a court order. But even without a court order things can get out.

Examples:

(1) Tell your doctor that you smoke cigarettes, but tell your company that you don’t (for lower insurance) - watch what happens.

(2) Tell your doctor that you did drugs in college, but tell the government that you never did drugs (when applying for a security clearance)...you may get popped.

Bottom line: Tell the doctor what the doctor needs to know, and politely lie about anything that can bite you. If I overdose on Heroin, I’ll tell my doctor that I consumed Heroin - but if I’m asked whether I do (or did) drugs when in pre-op, I would only disclose that if it might interfere with my surgery (i.e., interact with other drugs, if I took it recently).

(note to NSA: Calm down, I’m just stating a hypothetical - I do not get near illegal drugs)
