Turkey's Erdogan warns Russia not to 'play with fire'

ISTANBUL

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan warned Russia not to "play with fire" on Friday, but added he did not want to harm relations with Moscow, comments that look more likely to inflame than quell the dispute over a downed Russian bomber this week.

Relations between the former Cold War antagonists are at their worst in recent memory after Turkey shot down the jet near the Syrian border on Monday. Russia has threatened economic retaliation against Ankara, which Erdogan has dismissed as "emotional" and "unfitting".

"We very sincerely recommend to Russia not to play with fire," Erdogan told supporters during a speech in Bayburt, in northeast Turkey. "We really attach a lot of importance to our relations with Russia... We don't want these relations to suffer harm in any way."

Well, Russians do not have to go for full-scale war. They could support Kurds in their fight against Turkey. Turkey has many enemies. Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania are not friends of Turkey. Neither are Armenia, Iraq(current Shiite Iraq,) and Iran.

They can run successful proxy wars. I read an article in which some expert is wondering if Turkey could become the next failed state, after Libya and Syria.

Maybe you should have thought things through before you sided with savages, Erdogan.

It appears Erdogan's son is the one making the money from ISIS oil stolen from Iraq.

People should see it as a good sign that Putin is now saying that he will cooperate with Western powers in the effort to defeat ISIS. Russia can be a constructive force.

Well, Putin will close off leaky border between Syria and Turkey. No human traffic, materials, weapons, and especially oil. All trucks/tankers in sight may be destroyed.

Always, always, always follow the money.

The Russians might just put a bullet in the younger Erdogan’s head.

In 1920 Turkiye was a failed state. That’s what brought on Ataturk. As Erdogan pushes Turkiye back into the Ottoman mold while there is still a robust middle class and an army not yet completely co-opted it could all happen again. Ataturk came to the fore during an invasion by Greece which was trying to take advantage of the collapsing of the Sultan’s rule.

Obama will not defend anyone but himself. Treaties are meaningless to him just are laws & the Constitution.

Erdogan thinks he has NATO behind him. He’s gonna be in for a surprise when Obama wont take his call for help, & NATO says they are waiting for Obama to lead. Erdogan is easily as stupid & dangerous as Obama.

This would all be amusing but for the world war crisis that grows daily.

This is what happens when America wont lead. This is what happens when America has a racist, grossly incompetent, Marxist President.

Talk, talk, talk.

Russia expects others to respect its borders. I think that Putin was just tweaking Turkey and it turned out to be another one of his mistakes. Now, Putin is saying that he will cooperate with the West in defeating ISIS. That is a good thing and it is the direction that Putin should take. It was a mistake for him to think that he and Iran and Assad were going to share some sort of wonderful future together. Someday, Iran may come around, but Russia should not wait for them. Russia should not isolate itself.

"In an interview with France 24 on Thursday afternoon, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "If we had known if it was a Russian plane maybe we would have warned it differently."

Who else's plane could it have been? Assad's are mostly down.

Putin was cooperating with the West when his military shared the target and flight route of those Fencers - and look what he got

I honestly think the people running the WH are criminally incompetent if they did indeed share that information with Turkey to facilitate an ambush

Putin put it out there himself to the world .... Any rebuttal yet by the pentagon poodles?

Turkey has never done anything for us or NATO.

FReepers generally used to know a lot more about history.

Boycott, there was a conflict known as "The Korean War."

In that war a Turkish infantry brigade fought alongside the US's 25th ID against Red Chinese forces and took 3,000 casualties.

What has neo-Soviet Russia ever done for us?

Vladmir has Erdogan on ID call block figuring if its incoming from Turkey it’s probably just another sales call to sell a rug.Putin isn’t buying what Erdogan is selling.
