America’s higher education brought low
Washington Post ^ | George F. Will

Give thanks this day for some indirect blessings of liberty, including the behavior-beyond-satire of what are generously called institutions of higher education. People who are imprecisely called educators have taught, by their negative examples, what intelligence is not.

Melissa Click is the University of Missouri academic who shouted “I need some muscle over here” to prevent a photojournalist from informing the public about a public demonstration intended to influence the public. Click’s academic credentials include a University of Massachusetts doctoral dissertation titled “It’s ‘a good thing’: The Commodification of Femininity, Affluence, and Whiteness in the Martha Stewart Phenomenon.” Her curriculum vitae says she has a graduate certificate in “advanced feminist studies.” Advanced. The best kind.

Today’s “higher” education is a misnomer. I’ve never seen so many educated diots without a lick of sense..

They basically paid $90,000 for a piece of paper which says they are certified. If they went the full six years....it’s probably $140,000 invested. If they all had engineering degrees....I wouldn’t say much negative. But it’s become more of a comic opera now where Johnny Junior comes back home dumber than when he left.

Not all turn out that way but so many of them do. There are exceptions. My children were well grounded from our talks and warnings about what they would encounter out there. Hy turned out okay but them again we didn't spoil them growing up. We made them earn their own money and pay their own way. It makes a huge difference when you don't spoil them. Friends of mine who spoiled their children now have them leaning on them for money often even in adulthood. They're not truly self-sufficient and are a pain in their parent's behinds.

America’s higher education ceased being high at about the same time the 60’s campus radical revolutionaries lit up their roaches and dropped their first acid cubes. The race for higher highs and lower lows was off and they never looked back. In fact, the bottom opened up and our society is now circling the drain.

What’s with this picking on Martha Stewart, anyway? In the same time frame as Martha Stewart, a rather ordinary-looking overweight black woman named Oprah became a billionaire media sensation. How did they “commodify” Oprah? A sane observer would conclude that America is the land of opportunity, but you can’t say that on a college campus, for it has been determined to be racist! /s

They are very narrowly educated. Their knowledge has no depth or width, and they don't seem curious to learn more.

In spite of this they believe they know everything. They will defend their ignorance to death.

Lots of stories about college tgis week with kids home

Apperently kids are partying at college

The kids in the frat houses are paying tens of thousands to live in these places and drinking ever clear dropping rufis on a Tuesday whir the Asian kids are cooking and eating together excelling in the engineering classes and our kids are bouncing around taking road trips, eating crap staying up all night starting 15 page papers the day before they’re due

Duh

And listening to professors pontificatevon communism

For.35 thousand per year above room and board. Getting liberal arts degrees and working where? Doing what? After college

Make THEM pay for it. Parents. See how much they drink during the week after they sign away a loan

Make it stop.

Lol!

My son’s friend says college is like a cult.

You give them all your money for secret knowledge.

Kind of like scientology or something.

Personally, I believe it’s a litmus test for political views.

If this nonsense is confined to the faux ethnic and gender studies departments, that’s one thing. But if it spills over into schools of science and engineering, it is truly the end of higher education.

Asian kids are cooking and eating together excelling in the engineering classes

I wouldnt consider them without fault, though. The same desire for them to excel also motivates them to cheat in groups - even more than non-Asian. One or two does well, while a group ends up following along with the answers.

Won't disagree on the partying though.

Make THEM pay for it. Parents. See how much they drink during the week after they sign away a loan

It'd also help if the lenders were incentivized to carefully look over who can receive those loans. With the current inability to discharge many/most student loans in bankruptcy, lenders are not as motivated to select individuals with lower risk.

It also wouldn't hurt for some enterprising lenders to consider investing in suitable recipients wrt being hired out of college. The graduate gets a job, the lender ensures payback, and both benefit from the encounter.
