Following his father’s footsteps: the path of Jeb Bush (50 yrs of power-hungry Bushes is enough!)

THE vice president of the United States was unhappy. In 1983, a "Conservative Digest" poll of conservatives found that 64 percent of right-leaning party leaders wanted George H.W. Bush replaced on the 1984 Reagan ticket. "Light reading," Bush scribbled across a cover sheet as he sent a copy to his friend James Baker - adding a frowning face.

Reagan would have none of it - he liked and appreciated Bush. But the gulf between establishment and insurgent Republicans has only grown in the ensuing decades. The elder Bush's struggles through the years with a restive right shed light on the long history of conservative agitation and unease with the mainstream of the GOP. The phenomena of Donald Trump and of Ben Carson are only the latest and most vivid manifestations of a long-standing right-wing skepticism about figures like Jeb Bush, John Kasich — and George H.W. Bush.

The mutual skepticism between the conservative right and the elder Bush can be traced to his first race, an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate from Texas in 1964. The son of U.S. Sen. Prescott Bush of Connecticut, George H.W. Bush had moved to Texas in 1948 but was still attacked as an elitist carpetbagger in '64. Reflecting on the extremist John Birch Society, Barbara Bush wrote that the "nuts" would "never love" her husband.

As Jesse Jackson said:”Stay out dabushes.” Probably the only thing the man ever said I agreed with...No more dynasties. No more Kennedys. Carnahans. Longs. Cuomos. Enough already. This is America. Not Merry Olde England.

Kennedys. Carnahans. Longs. Cuomos. Enough already.

That is one stinking legacy. Even without the Clintoons.

Over 60 years, not 50. Prescott was elected in 1952. Of course, he solidified his ties to liberals such as UNCF and Planned Parenthood in the 1940s, and he was in business with Nazi industrialists from the 1930s.

Thankfully the Roosevelts didn’t make much of a mark in politics after FDR.

Let’s hope our little Republican primary voters have had enough Bushes, but I am not yet convinced so.

If only.

Reagan's biggest mistake had nothing to with amnesty.

I remember reading an article from that era, it said the conservative leadership in the party saw Jack Kemp as Reagan’s successor.

Not the best choice, Kemp had a heck of a RINO streak, on affirmative action for example.

I don't know why Kemp was considered the "rising star conservative" figure of the mid 80s, but apparently that was the situation.

I do remember when Dole tapped Kemp to be his running mate in '96. It was one of the few things that was wildly applauded and expected to breathe life into Dole's stagnant campaign. Then Kemp debated Al Gore and the result was meh.

Kenp had blue-collar star appeal. An intelligent fromer quarterback representing Buffalo. He may not have been perfect, but probably the last Pub out of the North-east who was not a full-fledged RINO.

Unfortunately, he might’ve picked Dickie Lugar. If only he had gone with Laxalt in the first place.

Kemp may have taken a few too many blows to the head. He wanted to make common cause with Farrakhan and the NOI.
