Wednesday on Fox News Channel’s “Special Report,†French Ambassador to the United States Gerard Araud defend a tweet he had posted in response to Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump immediately following the terror attacks in Paris earlier this month. Araud described Trump as a “vulture†for a tweet Trump had made earlier in the year following the January attack on Charlie Hebdo.
Araud acknowledged he deleted the tweet, explaining it was immediately as his home country was reeling from the attacks, but doubled down on the sentiment he originally conveyed, which was using a gun to defend themselves in such a situation is something “only in the movies.â€

Well no kidding Monsieur Ambassador. In France that’s the only place you’ll see it, on a movie screen, because your bans have been so ridiculously tight (yet that didn’t stop those terrorists). In America we’ll show you all over the place, and what’s more the cities with the tightest gun restrictions are the ones with the worst shooting crime rate. Fewer people will shoot in order to commit a crime, if they know there is a high chance they will be shot back.
He does not have to go that far. There are parts of Marailles and Paris that are pretty dangerous to non mooselimbs.
If a gun can be used to attack, one can be used to defend, n’est-ce pas?

The French ambassador can only speak from experience. The French experience is one of foreigners with guns crossing an ocean to defend themselves and save France time and again. “The Longest Day” “Patton” and “Saving Private Ryan” are just a few movies that cover the subject.
If it were possible, the French Ambassador might want to send his tweet to the 130 dead and ask them if they believe guns only work in the movies.
But in the USA, gun defenses number about 6MM per year (or more). The best data is from Gary Kleck, who started out being "anti-gun", and having the same "French idea", but converted to "pro-gun" after seeing his research results.
They were talking about a fella who came over on the Mayflower this morning who is the ancestor of a few million Americans (not me, as far as I know). I was thinking about a courageous ancestor of mine, a young French Huguenot girl who sailed over from Europe in the 1800s to find a suitable husband. Her first choice sadly expired from yellow fever. She then found and married my elderly and widowed GGG-grandfather, a veteran of Gen. Jackson’s 1813/14 Creek Campaign and the son-in-law of one of Illinois’ Founding Fathers. Gave him a new lease on life and several more kids, which included my GG-grandfather. Without this singularly courageous French girl, I’d not be here today.
Obviously, this boy has never been in the military.

Well, Monsieur, there’s a 25 year old girl who was 18 at the time, who is pretty sure that my use of a gun to defend her from a guy with a knife was NOT a movie.
