Protesters took to the streets in the wake of the release of dash cam footage showing police shooting a teen being shot by police, chanting "16 shots" for the number of times the officer allegedly shot him.
The dash cam video, released by police today a day ahead of a court-ordered deadline, shows officers confronting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who later died at a hospital, as he walked down the street on Oct. 20, 2014.
Chicago police officials said they were responding to a report of a person walking down the street with a knife and that McDonald refused to drop the knife when ordered.
The video shows puffs of smoke coming from the ground at some points, which court documents said were caused by bullets.
A prosecutor at Officer Jason Van Dyke's hearing said that McDonald did not step towards the officer, but the officer allegedly took at least one step towards him.
Van Dyke was charged with first degree murder and stripped of his pay and policing powers, police officials said today. He was held without bond.
"It's certainly everyone's right to make a judgment about it but I would just state that the judgment made by individuals who have viewed this tape from the comfort of their living room, on their sofa ... it's not the same," Van Dyke's lawyer, Dan Herbert said.

The delay was caused by the authorities pondering whether or not to cover it up; and if a cover-up, how? After a year they decided to bite the 16 bullets and release the video.

Blasting away at both Chicago mayor Emmanual and the DA. Walsh charged that because of the upcomming November Chicago 2014 mayoral election this mid October embarrasing police misconduct shooting incident was sat on. The family was quietly offered 5 mill$ in settlement.
Walsh ended his shortened talkie because of a baskeball game, which he concluded by citing the 395 black on black murders which occured during that period. To which none of the democrats or BLM blame whites and the cops agitators will address as they foment a Ferguson style protest to shut down Michigan Boulevard and downtown Loop shopping on post Thanksgiving shopping Black Friday .
So why then did the cop who did the shooting pull his cruiser up so close to the man with the knife?
And two, the video showed that the man with the knife did not advance towards the cop.

You (and others here) really need to watch the video again.
You are wrong on both of these points.
The cop pulled up a good distance away. The dead guy moved rapidly towards the cop car and was advancing, I would say unpredictably but just the fact that he was coming says volumes about potential intent, towards the cop the entire time.
What was the cop left to think except that the dead guy had bad intentions.
Tazers don’t work on hopped up PCP gentle giants. That 30 second video does not show the entire confrontation. The perp has a long history of physical violence so let’s at least put this in some sense of the uncooperative
vermin cops deal with. They are likely to taunt or provoke physical
violence with the cops so they cab sue the city.It’s called the “ghetto lottery”.
In our glorious city you’d be skinned alive if you set on foot in that neighborhood. Violence is the way of life for these people. The paramedics are begging for flack jackets in these toilet neighborhoods.
Why not a discussion of Black violence. there were 25 shootings last weekend in Chicago and not by the Amish or Jews. The same perps, Black.
