Following the downing of a Russian jet by the Turkish Air Force this morning, all eyes are on Turkey.

It should come as no surprise that Turkey was capable of taking out a Russian jet so easily. Turkey's military uses cutting-edge equipment, including some bought in from the US and a surprising amount it builds at home.

Here is some of the military hardware used by Turkey:

The red tracks are the Russian?...because it has them cross Turkish airspace one time and the tracks end far outside of Turkish airspace (im assuming the track end is near time of shoot down )....

While that track does show the Russians crossing Turkish airspace ...it does not seem to support the Sidewinder was fired while the Russian were IN Turkish airspace (if you extrapolate from where the tracks goes for and ends) but after they left it...

The track does not do the Turks any real favor and its the Turks own track....

Also note the blue track for the Turks end right at the border... I find it hard to believe....they saying the fired right at the border then pulled some incredible high G 180 turn?..

The blue tracks looks to may have been sanitized by the Turks to not have them cross in to Syria ...

Extend the blue track iota and it the Turks in Syria shooting Russian it Syria..

looks more like the shoot down was a hot pursuit and the Turks were across the border when they fired

it like the old saying you can shoot an intruder on your property but make sure they were on your property when you shot them( so you better drag the body in the house)... IE they can not be in retreat and off your land...

this could get ugly

All good points. I guess the real question is, would Putin and his people be up for an extended conflict in the theater.

There’s no doubt if the people back him and he commits that more resources would be allocated.

Why does Turkey want to take out Russia? Why are they not allied with Russia against terrorism? I suspect it is Obama somehow stirring that pot. He was just in Turkey. Shooting down that plane was a bold move and it is hard to imagine they did not check with anyone else before doing it. Obama is claiming he knows the reason was at least in part because of Russia’s attacks on the anti-Assad rebels. How does Obama know? And if that is the reason, it is Turkey instigating a war and not Russia violating an airspace.

“their control of the Bosphorus strait. “

Which they won’t control 72 hours after they close it.

I don’t think it is a question of if Putin wants to. Russians have a lot of pride. They will not feel there is any other choice, imo. Countries have collective character, for the most part. For Russia, pride is big. At least that is how it looks to me. They cannot be so smacked down without a response. It is not in them.

Something that is missing from that map is, what happened to the Turkish jets after the interception? The track doesn’t appear to show that; it just stops at the border with Syria, and 6-7000m from the nearest point of the Russian track. Did the Turkish jets do a 180 point turn away? At that range would the Russians have time to deploy counter-measures/decoys? Latest versions of the SU24 have ECM including missile-launch detection and flares?

Or.. am I looking at the Russian tracks backwards..and the end of the red Russian track is the upper left....if so my bad ...but if that was true..the blue track of the Turkish does not seem to be following the Russian

Excellent discussion. What are your thoughts on the outcome? Do you think Russia is going to go all-in, or do you think Putin’s just going to appease his ally for a short duration while he helps reinforce Syrian forces.

Good question. It is hard to guess, but I’ll give it a try.

I think Putin will analyze the whole situation very carefully for a little while. He will work behind the scenes and investigate. Whatever and whomever he decides is to blame will become direct and full out targets. He will try to not escalate it. However, it takes at least two to escalate things. Putin is only half of the picture. He will big time punish the main culprits in as narrow a way as the evidence prescribes. He must “save face.” He will call in his allies for symbolic support first. If it escalates more than that it will be because of future back and forth attacks.

I am in no way an expert so consider the source.

The blue track seem to have been scrubbed if it end as a straight line right at the border...

At very least the Turk would of logical turn towards the Russian to get a better firing position facing the Russian before firing... so you should see some turn at the end of the blue track..

but the blue track is a straight line that end at the border.. that not likely

... this looks like a hot pursuit shoot down at the very least that was across the border and that's what the Truks don't want to say

These liberals are just so stupid and I guess to young to know any history of how Russia can play the game without going to war....why go to war with the West when you can do so much to destroy Turkey and its leaders from inside.

Any thoughts on possible responses should Russia detonate a tactical nuke in Syria?

Ban barbecues in the US for the next 5 years to compensate for the nuke's heat thrown into the atmosphere.

well that would cause, at the very least, some localized, man made, global warming..

The Grunts in the Russian Military were born after the Soviet Union collapsed but their officiers, or at least the highest ranking ones were trained in the Soviet Military Academies back in the ‘80s.

The Russians haven’t fared well against Muslims in recent decades. The memories of the defeat in Afghanistan and Chechnya still linger

That map makes no sense unless there were two Russian planes taking two different courses but somehow merged on the 1-2 mile tip of Turkey.

The Russians have faired far better in Chechnya than we have in Iraq.

The Russians were bombing people opposed to Assad and calling them ISIS. They bombed a region friendly to Turkey.
