Are we supposed to be impressed that they have an F-16?

They have three hundred of them. Most of them are domestically produced copies though.

An outdated F-16 would have its hands full engaging an MIG-29, even an Su-34 if they have put them in service. Even without the cruise missiles, Russia is currently well-equipped to maintain air superiority in the Black Sea region.

“and is very friendly with several western European countries.”

Why yes, in fact, recently they sent a million or so of their friends that way for a permanent visit! You’re delusional if you think Europe is in a mood to go to war over Non EU Turkey when Belgium is in lockdown, Germany is full of dune coons, and they are shooting it out in France.

Some items on the article list include:

A) The Panter howitzer is a massive field gun recently developed in Turkey for use by its army. It has a range of 25 miles.

B) The US-designed MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System is capable of hitting targets 100 miles away. Turkey has 100 of them.

C) The Turkish military proudly introduced the Turkish-designed Altay tank into service this year. The Altay is made by the Turkish company Otokar, better known for making buses.

D) Turkey also has its own air-to-surface missile: the Mızrak-U. The guided missiles can lock on to and engage targets 5 miles away.

E) The BMC Kirpi is yet another homegrown piece of Turkish military hardware. The Turkish army has over 600 of them. “Kirpi” means “hedgehog” in Turkish.

F) The Turkish-designed and -built Ada-class stealth ships are equipped to deal with everything from submarines to aircraft.

G) The Turkish navy also has 13 German-made Type 209 submarines. Each is armed with 14 torpedoes and antiship missiles

Many western Europeans (including Brits) vacation in Turkey, and trade between them and Turkey is big.

Russia will huff and puff and nothing will happen.

Wrong. That will be the day Russia makes an anything-you-want treaty with Iran, and the Armenian corridor through Azerbaijan becomes the most strategic piece of ground on the Asian continent. It will also be the day Obama caves again, but there won't be anything remarkable about that.

One on one, yes. But quantity has a quality all its own.

Didn’t Turkey mess with Russia? What is this “if Russia decides to mess with Turkey”? Seems to me some sort of response is required unless it were an accident. This was no accident. Obama is now saying that it was because of Russia’s support for Assad and targeting of the anti-Assad rebels. That is different than “you used my airspace” lame reason. That drags the U.S. into it. This is very bad. But no honest person can say Russia chose it.

It isn't what you have, it is what you have in theater.

The Turks have some 300 F-16s, the Russians considerably fewer fighter aircraft in the region.

While the Russians could call in more aircraft and eventually win any war of attrition with the Turks (provided no one else steps in), in individual engagements as things currently stand, the Turks could engage with sufficient numbers to overcome the technical advantages of superior Russian armament in limited numbers.

That’s IF its dawn patrol over the western front. More likely the Turks would face a SAM threat like no other. That S300 and 400 are downright spooky and extremely long ranged.
The Russians excel at SAM and missile warfare.

Some say they even have the capability to launch astronauts into space. (and btw,,,,how did I wind up back in 1959?)

Egypt and Israel both have something like that number of them, too. Don’t get me wrong there are schools of thought that say a big pile of F-16’s coordinated well would be better than the equivalent cost of F-22’s or F-35’s. The Israelis shoot down LOTS of stuff with F-16’s.

But wikipedia says the Ruskies have more than 800 fighter of one sort or another. Turkey vs Russia, I’m betting on Russia.
