Will Smith: ‘Everybody Is Prejudiced,’ But ‘Racism Is Actually Rare’
BIG HOLLYWOOD ^ | 23 Nov 2015 | DANIEL NUSSBAUM

Posted on 11/24/2015 6:44:30 AM PST by Bratch

Will Smith says that prejudice could not have affected his massively successful acting career because, at the end of the day, “everybody is prejudiced” – but “racism is actually rare,” the star notes, and “America is the only place on Earth” that allows “people that look like” him the opportunity to be a star.

The actor was interviewed with five other A-listers for The Hollywood Reporter‘s Actor Roundtable conversation when he was asked whether prejudice had affected his decades-long acting career.

“My wife and I were just having this conversation, and we were going to the dictionary for ‘prejudice’ versus ‘racism,'” Smith replied, adding:

Everybody is prejudiced. Everybody has their life experiences that make them prefer one thing over another — it makes them prefer blond hair over a brunette; if you see somebody with dark skin walking down the street, you have a different reaction than you have [with] someone who is 5-foot-1 and white. But there is a connotation with racism of superiority: You feel that your race generally is superior. And I have to say, I live with constant prejudice, but racism is actually rare — someone who thinks their race is superior. I don’t want to work for them. I don’t want to work at that company. And the times I have come in contact with it, you get away from those people.

The majority of black folk.. at least where I’m from... are just regular ordinary citizens that work and go home and cut the grass like everyone else.
We wave to each other... we nod our heads to each other in the grocery store. Most are not obsessed with race. Most work among others as friends.
There is that minority that populate the ghettos and live off the system and commit the crimes and scream at very inviting and often outright encouraging media cameras.

But most just live and work like everyone else. This, however, does not make a good news story.

It’s refreshing to hear someone who doesn’t believe racism is rampant.

I wonder if this means he cancelled his $150K check to Nation of Islam?

He is 100% correct.

And he is also the new Cosby. The Al Sharpton crowd is gonna be gunning for him with all guns blazing.

I hope Mr. Smith does not have any Cosby-like skeletons in his closet, cause they are now out to destroy him.

Maybe he’s evolving. We can all hope we’re getting smarter & wiser as we age.

It almost sounds like the lyrics from Monty Python:

“Everyone is raaacist, everything is great,
If you say something raaaaacist, we get quite irate,

Everyone’s a bigot, not a one is good,
every white just needs to stay out of da hood!”

True that. His wife Jada is a dyed-in-the-wool community organizer type.

We can all hope we're getting smarter & wiser as we age.

If that's the case, how do you explain George Soros?

Gene Hackman. I’d watch the guy read the phone book. Michael Caine too. John Goodman. Not saying Will Smith is a bad actor, but he can’t rescue a movie by his simply being in it. Caine, Hackman, and Goodman can. There are others, but the list is getting shorter. Harry Dean Stanton can rescue a movie. Tommy Lee Jones (Gore’s roomie). Used to be that Morgan Freeman could do that, but even he jumped the shark. James Earl Jones can do it.

Interesting question. Most of the A-list actors can’t carry a movie by themselves, and really never could. Even Clint Eastwood had a company of players that appeared in most of his movies that really carried the picture for him. Then there was the blond chick he ended up having kids with. She was not good and nearly ruined a bunch of his movies - Sandra Locke. Sudden Impact and Gauntlet - Outlaw Jose Wales.

Can’t stand his politics, but Henry Fonda was a great actor. Jane was not. I watched the China Syndrome last year and it is amazing how bad that movie is. That movie scared a lot of people.

Soros is just plain evil. Soros knows what he’s doing. He’s not interested in becoming wiser. He’s out to accomplish a specific goal & appear to be succeeding.

As for Will Smith, & anyone else in Hollywood for that matter, I’m always glad to see them say something reasonable. For a change.

I would not call it evolving...It’s more of a rejection of the politically correct crap we endure today. it’s old school societal training.

Back when I was a kid, my mother often corrected my grammar. One phrase commonly used that will legitimately set a black person off in a split second, it the term “you people”.

Whites and blacks often use this term and I have heard it said in all parts of the US. It’s now considered racist to use it, but many still do and don’t understand the implications and meanings.

I was taught that the phrase should not be used because it infers that you are talking to a group and not a individual and to use it was insulting.

The line between racism and prejudice can easily be crossed by using a phrase such as that, even 60 years ago, yet I still hear it and have witnessed altercations caused by the use of it.

It’s such a simple thing but when you group people and deny individuality to anyone, it can be construed as racism yet rarely is.

I don’t know who to blame for this stuff....

So I blame ignorance. Bad educations, more so then intentional racism.

I think this is why I found this post to be relevant. There is a difference between prejudices and racism, and the line in-between is hard to see sometimes..

So I think we all have a responsibility to be aware of it, and to understand it.

All prejudice is not bad all predjudice is not good, but prejudice is an absolutely necessary function in every aspect of daily life.

We are prejudice in the food we like, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the soap we use, the people we associate with, the beer we drink on and on we exercise and embrace prejudice regardless of race, creed or color.

Leftist would have us believe that prejudice is synonymous with hate and all hate is not bad either, there are six things God hates yea seven are an obamanation(pun intended)!

Like the word ‘discriminate’, the word ‘prejudice’ has taken on a second meaning. Discriminate used to just mean to differentiate, or make a distinction. Now the second meaning is to make an unjust or prejudicial distinction. So many useful words, made unpopular by CHANGING THEIR INTENDED MEANING. But we are reminded, in the court of public opinion, words have no integrity anymore. A word can mean anything you want it to mean now. Just like the word marriage.

People can learn, and it sounds like he did. The liberals I know hate this guy. They claim he isn’t for a “bloody revolution with whitey”. Will Smith comes across as an average Joe just trying to do his best. I could be wrong, but he has always seemed not to get tangled up in racism.

Smith is a Big Lefty.

In Hollywood, being Black is a career enhancement, but you can kiss your career goodbye if you are Conservative. I don't know but there are possibly some actors who pose Left to keep getting choice roles, not saying Smith is doing that, but. . .

He should go to the dictionary and see how ‘marriage’ is defined. I have had two of them and they both agree.
