Maryland Student Who Prompted Closure of Campus Found Dead

A troubled student whose disappearance prompted the weeklong closure of the Washington College campus in Maryland was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Saturday in Pennsylvania, police said.

Jacob Marberger, 19, was a sophomore at the small college in Chestertown on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The school was closed Monday after his parents reported that he had a gun and they were unable to reach him. College officials initially planned to resume classes the next day, but after receiving new information from law enforcement, they opted to keep the campus closed until after the Thanksgiving break.

Marberger's body was found Saturday afternoon at a picnic area at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, Pennsylvania, according to Pennsylvania state police, who said he fatally shot himself. The sport-utility vehicle he had been driving was found with him, police said.

One of Marberger’s class mates told CBS Baltimore “From what I know is that he hazed a potential member of his frat, basically, and pulled out a gun on him. Everybody kind of thought it was a joke, so it was kind of let go. And then it was brought up to public safety later that week.” The Washington Post reports that Marberger resigned from the fraternity after the incident. The newspaper says that the gun used was a .22 caliber seven-shot revolver, an antique from the early part of the 20th century. Even still, it is on the restricted weapons list in Maryland.

Meanwhile his father, Jon, told NBC Philadelphia that his son had served his suspension and was cleared by a psychiatrist a week before he vanished. He added that at around 3 a.m. on November 16, Marberger had gone into their family home in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, and took a rifle from the home. Jon and his wife were sleeping when the theft occurred.

When he was last seen, Marberger was driving his green 1997 Range Rover. He has not made any threats against the school. He’s 5-foot-4 and weighs around 130 pounds. Washington College has asked anyone who knows his whereabouts to call the college at 410-778-7810 or Chestertown Police at 410-778-7810. He’s wanted in Kent County, Maryland, relating to four charges “Dangerous weapon on school property, handgun on a person, possession of a firearm by a minor, illegal possession of ammunition. They are from an incident stated to have occurred on or about October 21 through October 29th.”

This is a .22 caliber, 7 shot revolver: same class of firearm as the reported suicide weapon.

"Is it difficult to shoot yourself with a rifle?"

I would think not.

A pair of strong biceps and an obligatory big toe should do the trick, I suppose.

God rest this poor guy's soul. One should make it past the age of 19.

My father’s first attempt was with a rifle in the mouth. My mom caught him and he stopped. Final was pistol to the temple. Yes, it happens.

Am I for gun control? Hell no. He would’ve found another way.

That's how Del Shannon did it.

He was at a prime age for schizophrenia to develop. As the mother of someone at the same age I always keep my eyes wide open. 18 to 24 is when it usually makes itself known in males. So sad and so scary!

What color was the SUV?

Wait. What the hell does the SUV have to do with anything?
