Moscow/Beirut (dpa) - One hundred and sixty Russian citizens fighting for the terrorist group Islamic State in Syria have been killed, a Russian deputy foreign minister said on Thursday, amid stepped-up international military action in the war-torn country.

"At the present time, there are more than 25,000 foreign terrorist militants fighting under the banner of Islamic State, including from Arab countries, Europe, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States [a bloc of post-Soviet republics]," Oleg Syromolotov said, quoted by state news agency TASS.

He added that 2,719 Russian citizens had gone to fight for the Islamist militia in Syria. "One hundred and sixty of them have been killed, 73 of them have returned and faced justice, and another 36 have been arrested."

[ Jesus. Read your post, and think about whether we can tolerate russian domination of the Middle East, and if not, what it’s going to take to undo the damage. The answer is, “a new cold war, and all that entails”.

It’s not about whether we can blame the commie bastard. People need to think past the immediate political issue and their justified contempt for obama, and try to glimpse the big picture. ]

I dunno, during the entire cold war I don’t ever remember the Soviet Russians flying jets into buildings in downtown Manhattan.

That being said it is like picking between a eating a cow pie and bowl full of chicken poop.

Better ‘red than mohamm’ed

But only just a teeny bit better....

At this point i don’t think we can undo the damage ZERO has done to the middle east. Especially all the allies we have screwed over.

It may be better to let the land fallow in the ME except Israel and let Russia farm it and put more efforts into Israel as an eventual bulwark against the Russian Interests in the area.

Id rather have the Russians there than the Saudis. That’s the choice. And I don’t really want us there at all. Is your plan that we are forever the brokers of all the middle east?

Some kind of hundred year war concept?

It is in Putin’s interest, not just regarding Syria, but all those restless former Soviet/Muslim elements on his southern flank. All those “stans”. I doubt that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, or even Turkey are likely to jump into bed with him, and even with Syria stabilized in his favor, he doesn’t have all that much that is new. These guys will continue hating and fighting each other no matter what Putin or we do.

I think you have one zero too many. The figure I heard was close to 5,000. From the US maybe 300 to 400.

just look at our white hut occupant...he set out to destroy America and he's wildly successful....

but Romney was a rino and a Mormon and we just couldn't have "that"....

The reason Romney lost is Romney. He refused to campaign for the votes of the "lower 47%". He backed off on campaigning against Obama re the Benghazi outrage.

Don't blame us. Instead, work to elect Trump, who won't make these mistakes!

You hope he won’t make these mistakes. If you will recall, Romney was vicious to the other candidates during the primaries, then refused to go after Obama after he won the nomination. We can only hope we never see that replay again.

Yes, there were those that would not vote for him because he was a RINO and a Mormon and those folks have no right to complaiin about the mess we now find ourselves, but Romney was Romney’s own worst enemy.

fwiw, the way Trump has already gone after hillary and Sanders should give us confidence. Trump doesn’t have it in his DNA to do anything but strive for a winning strategy.

I haven’t seen him go after Hillary all that hard. Possibly, I missed it. I did see where he went after her today, then backtracked saying nobody could be as bad as Obama. I had rather he had pointed out that she is the same. The fact that she is a power-crazed, corrupt, pathological liar needs to be drilled home repeatedly every day.

Im no politician, but we have been stupid to the max these past eight years..

Why did we push to destabilize Egypt, the Libya, then Syria. Why did we leave Iraq with no stabilizing force? Now we’re asking our men and women to go back in?

What the hell is going on here?

I’m no politician but I can see that we’ve been fighting on the wrong side here. We have common ground with the Russians. I think Trump fully understands that.

Trust them? No, we hold the cards, we have the true power in the world.

Why has Obama kept us from being energy efficient, decimated our military, increased our debt, allowed radical islam to flourish? What the hell is going on here?
