My son was born in Bremen, Germany in 2001. My ob-gyn was upstairs and the pediatrician had the flat down stairs.

During the 8 months I went to my appointments, besides one other woman, I was the only white woman who I saw walk into either office.

The strollers would be lined up down stairs for the pediatrician and the women in cover and their throngs of kids would be coming in and out.

I will tell you though, I did witness quite a bit of hostility toward them even then. One time in Super Walmart (they were in Germany at that time) I saw a German man in his 20s stop in the aisle and aggressively stare down a Muslim family. I had my neighbors tell me not to let my daughter play with the Muslim kids down at the park, they asked me not to show the house to Muslim renters, etc. etc.

“...even then”? After the Munich Olympics of 1972, I would hope there would be some backlash, some ill-will...even then!
