Islamic State says 'Schweppes bomb' used to bring down Russian plane

CAIRO | By Ahmed Aboulenein and Lin Noueihed

Islamic State's official magazine carried a photo on Wednesday of a Schweppes drink it said was used to make an improvised bomb that brought down a Russian airliner over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula last month, killing all 224 people on board.

The photo showed a can of Schweppes Gold soft drink and what appeared to be a detonator and switch on a blue background, three simple components that if genuine are likely to cause concern for airline safety officials worldwide.

"The divided Crusaders of the East and West thought themselves safe in their jets as they cowardly bombarded the Muslims of the Caliphate," the English language Dabiq magazine said in reference to Russia and the West. "And so revenge was exacted upon those who felt safe in the cockpits."

Antenna? What are you smoking? Know anything at all about RF?

Additional hint: Why the stripped ends?

(Shaking head...)

In a country like Egypt, fairly crawling with Obama’s Muslim Brotherhood butt-buddies, that little bomb could be placed exactly where it needed to be to bring down an airliner and still make it look like an amateur act.

On that, it's a possibility. Maintenance crews in Egypt Sinai. A few screws loosened here and there, other parts sabotaged. And a can laden with small explosives tucked away as if a passenger had left it behind. I've been on lots of flights where garbage and personal items weren't cleared away before boarding by new passengers; it gets overlooked.

ROUGH equivalents... 1 kg of TNT = ~0.42kg of SEMTEX

not hard to put <1/2 lb of SEMTEX with arming into a 12oz can

They act like a pathological serial killer. They have to brag about it, letting the whole world know his exploits.

That should impress the idiot in chief. Maybe he can host another science fair with the jidhadists that have perfected the pop can bomb and Ahmed the clock boy.

Probably confused by the airliner brought down over Ukraine, that one suffered a hit to the cockpit. The Russian airliner’s cockpit was still attached to the wing assembly when it hit the ground.

I should not have said ALL INDICATIONS. What I meant to convey (and did terribly) was that there were several mentions of the bomb in the cockpit.

For example(from the excerpt of this thread)

“The divided Crusaders of the East and West thought themselves safe in their jets as they cowardly bombarded the Muslims of the Caliphate,” the English language Dabiq magazine said in reference to Russia and the West. “And so revenge was exacted upon those who felt safe in the cockpits.”

I am happy for you all to prove me wrong. It means we get the right answer. That is what I was trying to accomplish by addressing (what I thought) were other possibilities based on what I’ve read.

I haven’t put any time into analyzing the photos yet. I’m still sorting out the media misinformation.
Meanwhile I try to be the devil’s advocate when it comes to huge events like this. I don’t trust what we are being told. That’s why I like FR so much. I can voice an opinion and get intelligent feedback to work towards finding out the truth.

Just remember, many who are now convinced it was a bomb (mainly because the media tells them so), first believed it was a missile.

So... Thanks to both of you for your replies.

The stripped ends on the wires had me thinking that those wires were meant to connect to the detonator cap. wires.

Then, I questioned why were the wires twisted ?

That’s what led to the antenna theory. I assumed there must have been something in the toy mouse looking object where the detonator cap wiring could be connected.

Nowadays antennas can be so tiny that they could be hidden inside that mouse thing. You are probably right about them not being an antenna.

Do you think the device had an antenna ? I.E. Was it set off via RF ?

If not, how was it triggered ? What’s in that darn mousey looking thing anyway ?

Thank to you, and others, who have pointed out that it is possible.

It’s amazing how much INFO I can get other FREEPERS to contribute by playing the fool.(although some think I’m not playing)

What if there were more than one soda can bomb? They could be packed together in a box.

Thanks.

An obvious and simple answer to the ongoing discussion of this particular bomb.

Nah.... just confused. Partially on purpose.

The Russian airliner's cockpit was still attached to the wing assembly when it hit the ground.

Thanks for contributing that to the thread. I haven't looked at the photos yet (except for the door photo with small holes in it) and didn't know that. Many others may not have known either.

Again, it's why I love FR.
