Russia Pounds ISIS With Biggest Bomber Raid in Decades
The Daily Beast ^ | November 17th, 2015 | David Axe

The Russian air force just pulled off one of the biggest and most complex heavy bomber missions in modern history—sending no fewer than 25 Backfire, Bear, and Blackjack bombers on a coordinated, long-range air raid against alleged ISIS forces in Syria.

The Tuesday mission, which launched under the cover of darkness from a base in Ossetia in southern Russia, signaled a significant escalation of Moscow’s air war in Syria—and heralded the rebirth of Russian heavy bomber squadrons that once had withered from a lack of funding.

Gen. Valery Gerasimov, chief of Russia’s general staff, announced the raid on Tuesday, calling it part of “a new plan [for] the air campaign.”

The Free Republic He-Man Putin Hater Club sure has been quiet lately.

They must be tearing up Mom’s basement something fierce over this latest affront to their left wing narrative. Score one for Shirtless Vlad and the Wonderbears!

If ISIS fighters attempt to pack up and leave the area, the convoys should be bombed 24/7. A trail of trucks on open ground is a high-value target. This should have done a long time ago, in Syria and in Iraq, but that’s a topic for another discussion.

It is unclear how many casualties have resulted from the current bombing campaigns. Some reports are that very few ISIS personnel have actually been killed. I have doubts that bombing alone can do the job. A large ground force is probably necessary, but that’s out of the question given the current occupant of the White House.

Even with only a year or so left, Obama deserves to be impeached. Starting a serious impeachment effort now will at least take some of his time for the next year.

President Biden?

No. All the 34 cruise missiles were air launched. The Russian Defence Minster confirmed it. Some of them also malfunctioned. It was the Tu-160s Blackjacks and Tu-95s Bears that were launching the cruise missiles. The Russian Ministry of Defence has released video of the cruise missile being launched from the bombs bays.

You really hit the nail on the head with this post. I would also add, that as our allies realize there is little or no national security benefit from an alliance with the US, they also will be coming to the conclusion that perhaps there’s no reason to keep the dollar as a base currency. Hello hyperinflation and total economic collapse.

Like Enzo the Baker at the beginning of The Godfather, he lost faith in the justice system, so he turned to Don Corleone to administer justice.

"By my reckoning Russia has dropped more bombs on ISIS in three days than the USAF has in a year."

I would bet my last dollar on it.

The 14 Backfires yesterday probably dropped 500,000lbs of iron bombs in one day.

"Awesome!"

It is, indeed.

The Russians don't give them tail numbers. They give them names of past heroes. Just like warships.

Probably a good thing, then, that Ben, Carly, et. al. are unlikely to be put into a position to impose a U.S. shoot-down-if-violated “no-fly” zone in Syria.

"Is this really a tactical or a strategic matter?"

Anytime Russia moves with this much firepower it is a strategic matter and your questions are all valid and quite important.

Personally, I believe Russia would never give nuclear capability to Jihadis. And, no, I don't not put Iran in the classic "Jihadi" camp.

But I believe Pakistan is there now and Turkey is headed there rapidly.

So, they already have nukes.

I also believe Russia's end game here is twofold:

1. To reestablish itself as a true world power to be reckoned with, not dismissed. They are determined that their vote will count each and every time they speak. Mission accomplished.

2. De facto control over Europe and Asia's energy supplies through military positioning, superior diplomacy...and responsible security leadership. In process.

Clearly, Russia and Europe have more interests in common than at any time in history. This signals the end of NATO.

And China, Japan, India and Korea will come running to us. This will drive a peaceful reunification of Korea in the next 10 years under Chinese pressure.

But who knows what will happen 25 years out? What is certain is the entire world is realigning as a result of Russia's bold action. And it's difficult not to admire them for it.

Clearly Putin and his cabal are brilliant.

Me either. Hypersonic torpedoes, low flying missiles yikes. Our carriers are looking more and more like big old targets to me.

Say what you want about Biden. He would be one year and done. Two things, Biden grew up in America and he is a Christian. Makes a big difference, don’t you think?

Yes. But it is probably worse than either one of us thinks.

You will see every country in the world re-align themselves. Take your neighbor and biggest trading partner. The people here just elected an empty headed socialist who is more than happy to cosy up to the Chinese and Russian leadership.

Canada has the largest oil deposit in the world in Northern Alberta. That oil will be mined, processed and sold. The US had a chance to buy, refine, and resell virtually all of it. No taxpayer money involved. With Keystone cancelled it will be shipped to China and Europe.

So, does this bring Canada closer to the US, China, or Russia? This is an essay question.
