Microsoft, Once Infested With Security Flaws, Does an About-Face
The New York Times ^ | Nov 17, 2015 | Nick Wingfield

..in recent years, Microsoft has cleaned up its act, even impressing security specialists like Mikko Hypponen, the chief research officer for F-Secure, a Finnish security company,“They’ve changed themselves from worst in class to the best in class,” Mr. Hypponen said. “The change is complete. They started taking security very seriously.”

..Microsoft’s chief executive, Satya Nadella, says he is listening. On Tuesday, he delivered a speech to government technology workers in Washington about the importance of security in the technology business and how Microsoft has evolved to confront security threats.

..Mr. Nadella’s speech coincides with one of his top business priorities: cloud computing. Microsoft and others in the industry are aggressively promoting cloud services, which means persuading companies to store their corporate data outside their own walls. Analysts have warned that companies that do not take security seriously risk losing corporate customers, particularly foreign customers, to cloud-based services overseas.

..There is no doubt, though, that Microsoft has made thwarting hackers a priority. Microsoft’s latest version of its operating system, Windows 10, has a feature called Windows Hello that allows people to log in to a PC with a scan of their finger, iris or face instead of using a password — weak versions of which are a common cause of data breaches.

I run Bluecoat K-9 to block malware, spyware and phishing domains.

Its made my Windows 7 bullet-proof.

Hosts Block provides another layer of protection even if I have to edit my hosts file to allow a legitimate website to run again.

If you use Google or Siri or basically ANY personal assistant you are being “spied” on just the same as Cortana or any other MS service. It really isn’t difficult but you’ll have to Google or Bing or whatever.

FWIW you CAN turn off many if not all of the MS “spying” functions but you must opt out. It really isn’t difficult but you’ll have to Google or Bing or whatever. Maybe Duck, Duck Go.

I’m Grand baby sitting so I can’t go through it now.

Also mrs p6 and I have been using W10 with no problems since the July 29th release.

To the extent that this is true, it is a good thing. Remote sites should not be able to impose “cryptolocker” to password-protect your files without the user making an active selection locally. The same for most external attacks. Only a small fraction of users intentionally use the features that allow those vulnerabilities to be exploited, and those options should only be engaged through a local, manual selection.

I’m a believer in using the right OS for the right task, be it Windows or Unix and working with a mixed environment does not bother me at all. Microsoft has come a long way although I don’t care for what they do to gui interfaces and I am not that enthused about powershell although it can get a lot done. If the need arises as it might that my current employer frees up my future and I try some consulting on my own, I’ve been running various OSes in my lab to figure out what would work best for me. One of which is Server 2016 and it seems pretty solid to be so far out from release. I really like it. That article may be a puff piece but M$ may have gotten their act together!

I don’t use Apple products and I don’t use Google. For search I use IXQuick which is a no history no spy search engine. I have read about turning off some of the MS spying, but alas, it cannot all be turned off.

I fully understand that we cannot prevent all inappropriate spying in this day and age, but, I also am not willing to throw in the towel and let everyone spy on me all time. I do what I can to not be spied upon and Windows 10 is optional.

Don't hold your breath. The only reason MS has addressed security is that, having themselves monetized your privacy, they don't want to share that with any interlopers.
