Authorities say one burglary suspect is dead and another arrested after a 13-year-old boy opened fire at a home in Ladson on Tuesday.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office identified the deceased suspect as 31-year-old Lamar Brown of Summerville who died at Trident Hospital at 2:32 p.m. from gunshot wounds.

Investigators with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office arrested 28-year-old Ira J. Bennett of North Charleston and charged him with first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Around 1:53 p.m., deputies responded to a home on Elderwood Drive in the Woodside community for a report of shots fired.

An incident report states the 13-year-old was asked to come out of the home. Deputies say the boy then exited the home without incident.

Deputies spoke to the teenager who said he was home alone when a vehicle pulled up behind his home.

The boy said one of the two suspects attempted to get into the home, at which time the teen said he feared for his safety, got his mother's gun and began firing at the suspect.

"He saw a subject out back trying to get inside so he fired his mother's gun through the door and the subject reportedly fired back," CCSO officials said.

According to authorities, the juvenile fired several more times as the vehicle drove away.

Several neighbors reported to detectives that they heard gunshots, and saw a grey small car pull out near the home and speed away.

CCSO officials say a grey Chevy Sonic arrived at Trident Hospital with several gunshot holes.

An affidavit states the passenger in the car had three gunshot wounds, and was rushed to ER in critical condition.

Deputies say the driver of the car, identified as Bennett, reported that someone had shot his car while driving on the interstate.

Authorities canvased the victim's home and located a Colt .45 pistol in the area where the boy said the suspect was trying to enter the home.

Neighbors said they were thankful for the boy's quick action.

The mother of the 13-year-old said her family was shaken up by the incident, and wants the whole ordeal to be over.

According to the mother, the family moved into the home this past May.

The mother said she's never seen crime at the neighborhood since they moved in, and said she wished the Tuesday's incident never happened.

The family left the home for the night, saying they didn't feel safe at the home anymore.

The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation.

To be killed by a teenage kid? The dead man is lucky. The survivor will be laughed at in prison.

To be killed by a teenage kid?

And not a teenager like 18 and 19 year old gangbangers still get categorized, either. This kid was less than 365 days past being a 12 year-old.

I hope the boy doesn’t feel any guilt or regret over what he did as some people do after the fact.

His actions were 100% correct and he is a fine young man. Good job, buddy. It was you or them and you weren’t going to be a victim.

Nice shooting, too. And good neighbors.
