Governor Cuomo to Hike Minimum Wage to $15 an Hour for State Workers
New York Magazine ^ | 11/10/15 | Nathan Pemberton

Posted on 11/10/2015 4:08:04 PM PST by fhayek

On Thursday, Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to announce a sweeping pay increase for public-sector employees, with a new minimum wage of $15 an hour for entry-level state employees. The increase from the present rate of $8.75 will start with New York City workers in 2018 and radiate outward to the rest of the state by 2021. Ultimately, some 10,000 workers will be affected by the back-pocket pay hike.

Cuomo's move will come on the heels of a city-wide protest staged by low-wage employees — who include home-health-care, child-care, and delivery workers — demanding a $15 minimum wage. At the governor's behest, the state's board of labor recently approved incremental rate hikes for fast-food employees, also expected to reach $15 an hour by 2018, again, first in the city, and gradually spreading to the rest of the state by 2021.

This is extremely magnanimous of Mr. Cuomo, considering none of the extra money that this will require will come out of his pocket.

Small businesses will run out of New York... Larger companies will bring in more automation. End result? Fewer jobs.

Well, to be fair, this only covers who are employees of New York State. But, indirectly, the effects you describe will occur.

Margaret Thatcher once observed that "the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money".

And they’ll still face the oppressing prospect of making minimum wage and will want $20.

Yes, never mind about getting government the hell out of the way so the economy could improve.

The price of goods, services, houses, cars will rise because “people can afford it because of the wage hike”.. LOL Remember what happened to the price of homes once females started abandoning motherhood for their careers???

How many state workers make less than $15 an hours?

Those payrolls are filled with hacks, mostly Democrats, who take home fat paychecks, big benefits, and some don’t even show up for work.

"Small businesses will run out of New York... Larger companies will bring in more automation. End result? Fewer jobs."

This has been going on for a while. Since 1950, New York has lost an amazing eighteen (18) seats in Congress! To stay in New York, it probably helps if you like to pay taxes. Or if you like free stuff. Mostly the latter.

The day when your smart phone will ask you, "Would you like fries with that?" are already here.

If you pay a moron $15/hr to pick up garbage, how much is he going to have to pay the semi-skilled and skilled workers making around the new minimum wage?

what right does government have to dictate how businesses are run?
Open your own business and pay $40/hour, be humane!

I don’t know how many, but the current minimum rate among state workers, according to the article, is $8.75.

The problem with just large minimum wage increases is that prices in most areas will increase, as well.

Thus, the increases are almost self-defeating.

Florida doesn't have a State Income Tax... seems the small business people who left New York all moved here...

I”m sure this will warm the hearts of New Yorkers who bust their ass for $15 an hour and their Parks and Recreation counterparts who sweep out restrooms and play kickball with crumbcrunchers will make the same amount.
