I’m still wrapping my head around squirting something with a walking stick.
Coyotes around here (NY) know that my presence means bad.
So they avoid me like the plague.
Sadly, they make guest appearances for others, when I can’t smack the things for being pests.

It also says a more aggressive approach might be needed such as throwing sticks, small rocks, cans, tennis balls and rubber balls at them.

They are very smart. They know what a pelt hanging on a fence means. They know what a rifle looks like - at least the ones that survive do.

The more you shoot them, the smarter the survivors get. There’s no stopping the modern coyote-wolf-dog!

“Coyotes can’t be hunted with a gun because city ordinances do not allow firing a gun, except in self-defense or to defend a family member. However, Glider said that exception probably would hold for fending off an attack on a pet, although he advised against using a gun.

“You would have to be pretty good at what you’re doing or you would end up shooting your pet,” he said.”

Better still , call the PD and they will come out and shoot your dog for you!!

Depends on the neighborhood. You have to live on 10 acres, or more, in certain designated ag districts to be allowed to hunt varmints with a gun.

If you can hit it with a squirt gun, it's in Handgun range and if it's attacking your dog, it's self defense.

If one attacks my Bichon, it's dead, then I hunt for his buddies and they all die.

Wish they’d equate this location with me rather than just associate me with bad.

We have lots of coyotes in the desert. We have had neighbor’s dogs taken. You have to be careful. I carry a pepper spray GUN (available on Amazon). Shoots about 20 ft. so is better than most of the little canisters.

Some folks carry air horns. I do too but they hurt your ears so I don’t like them.

Turn around and walk backwards. They don’t like it. I have done it. They want to sneak up on you.

If it doesn’t and starts coming towards you, is it ok to try and run away then? Climbing a tree might work.......

*********************************

If a coyote doesn’t run away after “hazing” (yelling, throwing stuff, etc.) & actually starts coming after you, I’d be worrying about rabies.

No trees for me ....we have farm property with a good population of coyotes in the vicinity - never go far from the house without a pistol strapped to the hip.

“Bear spray? Thirty foot range.”

Possibly but spray is shotgun like so your pet may get blasted if the coyote has it.

What I do when I hike around the neighborhood with a weighted pack to keep in shape is carry a 4-5 foot 1”dia. hickory stick as a hiking staff. I stained it for aesthetic purposes so it looks fashionable and capped with a plastic cap for furniture legs to keep the wood from being chewed up on the concrete.

The other end has the end cap from a Greek spear fitted on it,commonly called a “lizard sticker”
http://www.bytheswordinc.com/p-807-greek-buttcap-for-greek-spear.aspx
I wrap the end cap with a large handkerchief kept in place with some heavy rubber bands.

I use it as a dog deterrent. All I have done when menaced by some local Fido who wants to make an issue of me being on the street is invert the pole keep the point between me and the dog and offer the cloth wrapped end for him to bite. When his teeth clamp down on steel it sends a good shock through his jaws. Fido yelps in pain and backs off.

If worse came to worse you could thrust straight into his mouth like a spear plus the shaft works as nice cudgel and the set up looks quite innocent.

I guarantee you that the police and animal control USE GUNS to kill animals that pose a public threat, but don't justify use of force as a matter of self-defense.

Rules for thee, but not for me.

Aren’t these critters classified a predator/vermin nation-wide? Why wouldn’t it be appropriate (allowing for human population density) to simply zap the them?

Good case for a suppressed .22.....the neighborly thing to do.

I was thinking more on accosting them on hikes. But I carry so there’s no problem there. Hikes meaning up in the mountains.

***then we hang the carcass on the barb wire fence***

I remember seeing coyotes on fences all over the west up until around 1974 when the animal rights people threw a fit.

The fence I remember the most was one south of HOPE, New Mexico back in 1959, just past the HOPE trash dump. It had coyotes hanging on both sides of the gate, three or four golden eagles, and one day we went out to the dump and there was a cougar hanging on the fence.

We used the feathers from the golden eagles to fletch our home made arrows. Today, I believe that would get me several years in prison.

...Biden says fire a blast into the air with your 12 gauge...

It has to be a double barrel. No six shot or greater tubes or magazines. Off your balcony, no less. Crazy Joe’s advice will get you arrested in most all city limits

ONE shot with #4 buck or smaller.

They’ll run off and die somewhere else.

The noise? Deny, deny, deny.
