That was an amazing performance in 1988. He went 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA. Two shutouts in five starts, and he came in for a save in the NLCS, too. He was also 3-for-3 at the plate in the World Series, with an RBI and a run scored.

Even Tommy Lasorda said that the Dodgers did not belong on the same field with Oakland.

But extraordinary pitching trumps extraordinary hitting.

It was more than that. I think Oakland expected to win the series easily and mailed it in. I think Hershiser was the only Dodger pitcher to really dominate the Oakland lineup. The Dodgers out scored the A’s 11-2 in his two starts, but the teams were pretty evenly matched in the other three games. The Kirk Gibson home run to win Game 1 was devastating.
