Trump lays out plan to reform Veterans Affairs
The Hill ^ | October 31,2015 | David McCabe

Trump promised that in his administration, veterans would receive better healthcare more quickly.

"The plan will ensure our veterans get the care they need, wherever and whenever they need it," he said.

Trump said that he would institute policies that would see Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities competing with non-VA hospitals. He said that under his plan, any veteran could go to a doctor that accepts Medicare and receive care.

In a winding indictment of the VA system, he targeted Veterans Health Administration hospitals that came under fire in the last year for keeping long wait lists of veterans who needed crucial care.

“Think about me going to my doctor’s office and waiting four days,” he said. "If I wait 15 minutes, I’m angry as hell at the doctor.”

Trump said the VA system needed to be maintained but reformed. “I don’t want to get rid of it, I want to supplement it," he said.

He promised to fire "the corrupt and incompetent VA executives who let our veterans down" and update the VA's policies to meet the needs of the younger veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The fact that many VA hospitals don’t permanently staff OB-GYN doctors shows an utter lack of respect for the growing number of female veterans,” Trump said, pledging that under his leadership, every VA hospital would have doctors specializing in women's health.

Veterans hospitals would, he added, put in place technology that connect patients to doctors and allows them to manage their care.

Trump, who appeared to break from his extemporaneous remarks to consult a document while speaking about his policy proposal, said he would also invest in policies to help ease the transition from active duty to civilian life.

He pledged to institute programs to help veterans start businesses and find employment,

Trump said the VA system needed to be maintained ...
I agree, but the medical side of the VA ought to eliminated and vets - with service connected disabilities only - should be given vouchers for medical care at local facilities.

I admit that I pay more attention to Trump than I do to the other candidates. I like him. I may be off base, but I have two observations:

1) Trump regularly comes out with detailed plans telling people exactly what he will do about the VA, or taxes, or immigration. I don't see other candidates being so open and detailed.

2) Some people who don't like Trump criticize him because they think his whole campaign is based on: "I'm gonna fix stuff, and it's gonna be great!!!!" and they wish he'd come out with some kind of detailed plan.

See if you can get my CongressLesbian, Tammy Baldwin, on board with this.

What? Oh, never mind. She hates us Vets and will fight you tooth and nail for improving our lives in any way, shape or form.

She prefers to keep us drugged up and locked away in cr@ppy VA Hospitals.

(Actually, WI is better than most, but in case you missed it - and you would’ve because the Enemy Media barely reported on it - she was in the middle of an over-drugging situation at one of our VA Hospitals. A Vet died, and it was then discovered just how many Vets are drugged into oblivion. Hard to VOTE for Conservatives when you’re drugged...)

Send Medicaid patients to the va and vets to civilian hospitals. Right now illegals get better and more timely care the vets.

I agree. The closer to their home that they can get care, the better off they would be.

I heard that report about the over drugging - in CA maybe? We need to get these blockers out of office. The Tea Party needs to better vet viable, electable candidates.

I agree. Cruz and Carson have tax plans, but who else has a gun position as detailed as Trump, let alone a VA plan?

"The plan will ensure our veterans get the care they need, wherever and whenever they need it," he said.

This should have been enacted years ago for Veterans and it's a disgrace it wasn't.

Go Trump!

I guess I am about to the point where I’d favor “privatizing” all the VA hospitals and thereby get rid of the “civil service” BS! Veterans deserve the best medical care available, not the kind of crap they have for a “health system in the UK!” As it is, they are held hostage in a way that is life threatening to them. What we have today is criminal!

I read the article, what details. The man speaks in generalities, just like all the others. He said he will impliment policies to change things. I have been hearing that since the 1960s. No thank you on trump.

They all speak in generalities. What are they supposed to detail? I am going to change the toilet paper at the VA hospital in Tucson to save money?

I am not sold on Trump, but there is little doubt he will shake things up. I don’t want another wonk in office that will fine tune the crap that is failing so badly.

Trump is an executive. They set ideas and goals and put people in place to implement them. If they are not implemented they fire them and put other people in place to implement the vision. I don’t understand why so many FReepers fail to see this. The government is so huge that President’s can’t afford to get bogged down in minutia like Clinton so often did. Set the goal - put buttkickers in charge - and you can shake up the beast. Put in the finetuning policy wonks and nothing will change.

It’s actually the most attractive thing about Trump for me, yet I see many here continually criticize the “lack of details.” An executive’s job is not details - it’s vision and goals.
