The Antarctic ozone hole has swelled this month to one of its biggest sizes on record, U.N. and U.S. scientists say, insisting that the Earth-shielding ozone layer remains on track to long-term recovery but saying residents of the southern hemisphere should be on watch for high UV levels in the weeks ahead.

Increase in size of ozone hole is proof of global cooling
The Antarctic ozone hole is an area of the Antarctic stratosphere in which the recent ozone levels have dropped to as low as 33% of their pre-1975 values. The ozone hole occurs during the Antarctic spring, from September to early December, as strong westerly winds start to circulate around the continent and create an atmospheric container. Within this polar vortex, over 50% of the lower stratospheric ozone is destroyed during the Antarctic spring.
As explained above, the primary cause of ozone depletion is the presence of chlorine-containing source gases (primarily CFCs and related halocarbons). In the presence of UV light, these gases dissociate, releasing chlorine atoms, which then go on to catalyze ozone destruction. The Cl-catalyzed ozone depletion can take place in the gas phase, but it is dramatically enhanced in the presence of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs).
These polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) form during winter, in the extreme cold. Polar winters are dark, consisting of 3 months without solar radiation (sunlight). The lack of sunlight contributes to a decrease in temperature and the polar vortex traps and chills air. Temperatures hover around or below −80 °C. These low temperatures form cloud particles. There are three types of PSC clouds—nitric acid trihydrate clouds, slowly cooling water-ice clouds, and rapid cooling water-ice (nacerous) clouds—provide surfaces for chemical reactions whose products will, in the spring lead to ozone destruction.

The expanding o-hole is a result of legalizing same sex marriage.
Last night there was an excellent show on the formation of our earth, our solar system and universe. Way to much to absorb...to bigga eat...but it gave me some perspective on how SHORT a time we humans have been around.
I got the idea that God would right things anyway, just so we could survive. That was just an afterthought.
I think it is the hole in LIBs’ heads that is getting larger.
Yesterday there was a post about the Antarctic ice sheet not sustaining a net loss in mass.
Today we get the obligatory scary warning about the Ozone layer.
Somewhere out there is a refrigerator with FREON in it! Send out the troops! Find the perpetrator!
But I switched to stick deodorant and don’t use the aerosol cans any more. How is this possible?
Maybe Bernie Sanders was right. Maybe we don’t need 23 brands of deodorant. That would fix it, right?
And we haven’t used Freon-12, the culprit back then, in 25 years.
Must be left over Freon ... getting rid of that as a coolant was supposed to fix that ‘hole’ business.
NASA said that the hole was “finally closing up” back in May, too.
